Concubine

Rediscover the delights of Chinese cuisine at this authentic and classy establishment on the fringes of Adelaide's Chinatown. Forget about the plastic tablecloths and worn out utensils that sometimes come hand-in-hand with high street Chinese food; Concubine is for the refined diner.

Dark wood panels, glowing red lanterns and upholstered chairs complement the upmarket ingredients used by executive chef Kenneth Ting. Wagyu beef, lamb cutlets and seasonal seafood are enhanced with all the usual flavour suspects of a Chinese kitchen. The menu features genuine Chinese favourites such as san choi bao and desserts such as fried banana and black rice pudding. The intimate, upstairs, private dining room, the Shanghai Room, steps back a few paces with its silk stools and cute retro posters.

Fancy Chinese
We went out to Concubine last night with friends. The menu was diverse and enticing and we eventually settled on our order and were thrilled with the flavours we received - not over powering but subtle.

The serving sizes weren't massive but they were filling and obviously quality ingredients. One of the orders though was for a spicey fish dish - wow, a whole fish came out, that was impressive!

For entree's, Mains, a couple rounds of drinks and 1 dessert & 2 coffee's we paid $230. That's acceptable for the ambiance and quality of food and service we received. The real deal sealer was the voucher to a free main the next time we came in...a nice touch.

Great experience
Have been to Concubine as part of a big group and also with a few friends. The service and food is always excellent. The food is fresh, light and a well executed modern version of Chinese. None of the salty, oily textures that come with your average Chinese. Best of all it doesn't break the bank when you get the bill at the end of the meal. Definitely refer friends and colleagues to this restaurant and will be returning again myself.

A wonderful evening!
I had guests staying with me from overseas and I wanted to show them the best Adelaide had to offer. A friend of mine recommended Concubine, but I was skeptical as I'd never heard of it before. After looking at their menu online, I decided to give it a go.

Our evening was nothing short of wonderful. We ordered everything to share and all of the food was delicious. My favourite entree was the duck wraps, and the main size prawns (from the SA coast) in curry sauce were amazing. None of us could resist dessert so we ordered one of everything and shared it all.

The service was fantastic - we never had to wait too long for food and our wine and water glasses were always topped up. The meal worked out to less than $80 per head for 3 courses and several bottles of great wine. I thought you had to fly to Melbourne and fork out an arm and a leg to dine at a place of this standard! From now on, I'll be recommending Concubine to all of my friends and taking the credit for such an amazing find.

A kid-free evening
My partner and I went to Concubine for a meal while our child was having a sleepover. The food was great. He ordered the mahjon chicken which was huge (he always says he never gets enough food on his plate). I had the lamb cutlets (5 of them). We also had an entree each and a lovely bottle of wine. Very pleasant evening (kid free) sitting outside watching the lightning sky show.

Another newbie hits the spot!
Fantastic dinner by group of friends
Was a little hard getting the attention of a waitress to being with, but everything flowed after that.
Food was fantastic; we ordered duck wraps for entree, mains were wagyu beef, chicken stir fry, barramundi, lamb cutlets (all shared), rice, followed by divine desserts - fried banana, sticky rice and a chocolate pudding. A very lovely new dining spot and atmosphere, wasn't too noisy or busy and decent space around tables. I'm sure it will be packed once people hear about this place!
