Housed in the former Mietta's building in the CBD, Comme includes two massive function rooms, a stylish wine bar and, of course, Comme Kitchen. A laidback bistro, Comme Kitchen offers all the suave sophistication expected from this part of town, without the intimidating atmosphere and extortionate prices normally associated with a venue of this calibre. The menu is split into small and large share dishes - similar to the in-vogue tapas dining style. However, Comme labels their menu "family-style", evoking images of raucous familial gatherings rather than subdued (and repressive) sophistication. Chef Daniel Southern creates rustic Mediterranean dishes from the French/Spanish border, such as rabbit rillettes with onion confit and caper berries, or white anchovies with grilled leeks and saffron dressing. In keeping with the concept, diners need not commit to a whole bottle of wine, as an admirable selection of wines are available by the glass, from Aussie labels to French and Spanish wines - plus five different sherries.

Valentine's day
I was very impressed with the Valentine's dinner at Comme Kitchen, the food was divine and the service was fantastic, a little bit noise comming from the bar section, but didn't bother me at all.

A late evening dinner
I dined with a good friend of mine late on a Saturday night. By this time the small dining room was full and the bar out the door was busy. I found the noise not overbearing, though noticeable. I felt sheltered from it and it added to the bustle of the place. Their menu is substantial, and you'd be hard pressed to miss out on something. There were plenty of vegetarian dishes, which suited me, and the tastes were really excellent. A junior chef obviously prepares the side dishes, which were markedly inferior to the main dishes, but that leaves plenty of potential for improvement and shouldn't detract too much. I recommend dining late, about 9pm or so. That leaves you opportunity for slipping over to the couches and enjoying a lazy dessert and coffee. The whole arrangement is a bit European and blurs the time between dinner and late night adventure. The staff were friendly and had plenty of knowledge and vivacity. We left feeling satisfied, and $40 each we felt was by no means excessive for what we'd received. The wine list is also worth a good going over for some treats you won't find everywhere. Take a friend with whom you need to catch up on news and gossip. Don't take your parents.

Comme, Not Again
It was early in the week but the bar crowd was going strong and the noise filtered into the restaurant area - tough to hear anyone speaking! As the vegetarian in the dining group, I was TOLD that the chef had prepared something for me. I was not asked whether or not the dish was to my liking (it was not - I hate melted cheese). Dessert was disappointing - the fabled chocolate cream with pears and pedro ximinez - the pastry chef should learn that the chocolate cream should contain SOME chocolate at least and when using Valrhona for this one, Guanaja would suit it better than Caraibe! We did not have a good night. Service was flippant and overall the the price paid for the experience resulted in a low-value rating.

Comme undone
Ok, we were psyched, we had read the reviews, and had been hyped-up by friends who went there early in the piece. Comme was going to be fantastic - no?
No, definitely not. But, to its credit, the food was faultless, verging on superlative. We will however, never return.
The service was poor, dismissive and elusive. I was still holding the wine list - unable to get anyone to place my order - when the entrees arrived, and still it remained in my hand, so I was forced to put it on the floor, as the table we had booked a month in advance was barely big enough to hold our plates and glasses, let alone the wine list. We ate, without wine. When it did arrive, we had nearly finished our mains.
The noise in the dining room was excruciatingly loud, to the point where we could neither converse nor make ourselves heard to the staff. It was a Tuesday night - one of the quieter nights - and sound poured in from the bar and bounced off all the hard surfaces in the room.
A hefty bill followed to pay for a night of disappointment. No tip was left and our friends have been warned off. Unless they are sado-masochistic in their tastes, we bid them all the best.

Comme in and enjoy the fare
Comme Kitchen is a eclectic mix of a restaurant and bar housed within a location that would hold good memories for many Melburnians. After initial confusion as to the reason behind a bouncer at the door, all was okay after we moved past the Friday night suited-up, dressed-up over-20s chic gen-X bar crowd and into the dining area hidden behind the sweeping staircase.
The setting was intimate, however, Friday night, with the bar crowd having an obviously good time, is probably not the best time for a quiet intimate meal! The staff were attentive and knew the menu well, the meals were very tasty and the portions perfect. We had the small plates (4-5 is more than enough to sate the most ravenous appetites between 2) to sample the excellent fare broadly. There was enough room to fit in the must-have chocolate torte, which quite simply, was the best I've had.
