One of the few Indian restaurants in Melbourne specialising in the cuisine of Southern India, this restaurant is a little bit different from the other run-of-the-mill curry houses out there. The food is not nearly as rich as that from the north, so you don't get that overstuffed feeling that often accompanies a night at an Indian restaurant, and you can sample more of the treats on offer. The chicken Kerala stew (cooked in coconut milk and ground spices), lagoon meen polochathu (a Kerala delicacy of fresh fish fillet marinated in spices and wrapped in banana leaves) and the beef malabari (with coconut, ginger, garlic and fresh curry leaves) are perfect examples of the lighter, Southern style.
There's plenty for the vegetarians here, which means it's a popular spot with groups. As an added bonus, for once you won't be too stuffed full of rich, spicy mains to try out a kulfi or lassi at the end of your meal. There's a reason these sweet drinks are so well-loved in India: they are the perfect end to a meal of not-too-decadent but altogether satisfying traditional South Indian food.
