Cochin

Sleek and stylish, this black and white mod-style restaurant celebrates the French influence on Vietnamese cuisine with an unusual menu. Dishes might range from a very Gallic duck liver pate to a more oriental banana blossom salad, while successful hybrids might include a duck a l'orange with a spicy edge.

below expectations
After all the hype from the reviews and the mouth watering photos from the website... I was determined to try this place. It took a while to get around to that since the restaurant only opens for dinner five days a week.

The restaurant was empty when we arrived 7pm on a thursday night, and it remained empty until the time we left. Reason? The food. We had two appetisers / entrees and three mains. The appetisers were mediocre and the mains were even more disappointing. The salmon was dry, the duck was dry, the spicy beef roll wasn't spicy, the soft shell crab was too oily... disappointing. The pork hock was alright... mainly because it tasted nicer than it looked.

There was only one staff that night, she was quite friendly but not really committed. We saw her chatting, reading the newspaper, and we had to walk into the kitchen once after the mains, just so that we can get our water refilled for the first time.

Not really worth it, let's hope it was because it was a weekday...

One of the Best
This is one of the best. Make sure you try the tasting menu and experience all this restuarant has to offer. The waiter is extremely knowlegable about the menu wich enhanced the experience. Food , service, price and atmosphere were pretty much perfect.

Going back for more
The menu is ideally shared to experience its variety. The entrees that stood out were the soft-shell crab and then the tiger prawns. The scampi with basil and mango salad for main was great too. The venison was interesting though overpowered by the chocolate sauce.

The minimalist interior with muted lighting was unobtrusive, though some art works would fit nicely. A series of ottomans down the centre of the room served as seats that we shared with our backs against other diners, which invited some humour but not always comfortable to sit and relax with a full house.

The service was welcoming and friendly with thorough knowledge of the menu. They coped very well when the restaurant filled up.

BYO - but be prepared as the pub bottleshop is mediocre.
Our bill was about $260 for 6 to share a mix of entree, main, dessert.
