Cloudland

As part of one of the Valley's most stylish and popular bars, Cloudland's restaurant is a sophisticated, buzzing space, perfect for a spot of people-watching. The brightly-coloured banquette seating and the light, fun interior go perfectly with the menu, which is uncomplicated mod-Oz. With dishes like duck tart and open fish pie, the unfussed, clean and modern style showcases head chef Benn Hodges' considerable talents.

What an improvement
I recently visited Cloudland for dinner with a group of friends and we were so impressed by how much they have improved since our last visit in 2010. We noticed a lot of changes since our previous visit. For starters they are no longer trying to be a fine dining venue inside a night club. The menu is now shared/grazing style which suited our group very well. The menu is huge, even something for my fussy painful vegetarian friends lol. We had a set menu (I think it was about $40 per head) and it included about 6 courses. We were stuffed by the end of it. I think before you couldn't get away with an entree and a main for under $50. The service has also improved, looks like they have ditched all the young staff and employed some more mature experience people. If you haven't been to Cloudland for a while i would recommend going back soon. Such an improvement :)

Welllll.....
I attended a Christmas function here this year and was impressed by the aesthetics, the food seemed very fresh and the bar service seemed fairly efficient though this was from a list of set drinks that the function supplied.

The problem I think is the fact that most of the people who work at Cloudland (some of whom I know) are young and inexperienced, possibly to save costs. I am not surprised that Lake77's friend was denied access by the "wrong shoes", as this is the culture in the Valley, and most of the time it is not about shoes but about them not wanting more people inside or only wanting a high turn-over rate of customers drinking than people sitting down to dinner (and very bad timing as that was apparently after the races). This is where they can avoid the typical situation restaurants experience who can't really deny access and must accept people if there are available tables.

I personally was happy to go to a function here but I think that the prices they have set for drinks and food only attract the much older groups that they were not intending to attract in the first place. I personally would not choose to go there for drinks or a meal as I think there are many other places in Brisbane with better atmosphere ie no idiots, better service, food, choice of drinks and prices that are not right in the middle of Fortitude Valley.

By the way, if you think this is like the good old Cloudland, think again. That type of venue is never going to exist in the Valley.

stuffed up booking
Well what a crap restuarant and i have not even set foot into it, i rang and made a booking over a month in advancefor a christmas work function then rang 1 week to confirm the booking only to be told that there is no booking as they apparently have tried to ring me on 4 occasions but got no answer, what a load of crap my mobile never leaves my side and my work number has not changed since we have been in the building so now i have to find another restuarant that can accomodate us on short notice. very dissapointing from a restuarant that is supposed to be world class my local pub is better organised.

Extremely disappointing
Well I cannot comment on my dining experience as we were denied entry to dinner at 6:30pm on a Saturday night for a booking that was made one month in advance. Why you ask ... because one person in the party was not wearing the 'right' shoes. When asked to speak to management, the gutless GM came down but would not even speak to us about the situation. Perhaps staff need to advise patrons of their rediculous & ever changing fashion rules when making a booking. In the end we were invited in for dinner only & then we would need to leave immediately afterwards. I think you know what we chose to do. The same person who was denied entry was at Cloudland only days earlier in his workwear uniform & wandered through the front door with ease. The other funny point of interest was we were a civilised sober bunch however groups of loud & drunk people who had obviously just been bused in from the races were ushered straigh in as they were wearing the correct shoes. Extremely disappointing.

Everything is fab, but sloppy service.
This place really is phenomenal and great for Brisbane. The look of the place is really quite stunning. I've been a few times now, once for sit down dinner. Dinner was well priced, served in good time and a good sized serving. There were two dishes that sounded lovely, but I settled for a pasta dish, which was superb.

I did have a few drinks at the bar also and found this particular time and everytime I have been the service is slow and not very attentive. Each time, so much so that people next to me have also mentioned the same.

I would recommend this place, its quite spectacular, but perhaps pick up on the service!

Food doesn't match the cocktails
You can't deny that Cloudland has great atmosphere and cocktails, but the menu doesn't quite match. While I could find items to pick from the menu, I wasn't really excited by any. I ended up ordering the beef cheeks on rice noodles (odd combo right?) which had a really delicious sauce but had a few flavours (including fresh tomatos) that didn't quite work. Plus it was coldish. If you want a laugh order the passion fruit curd for dessert - it is more experimental than dessert and even came with a prawn cracker. That said, cocktails were phenomenal - make sure you try the bubblelicious martini and cracking strawberry martini!
