Cicciolina

Walk past this Acland Street stalwart when it's closed and you might never guess how popular it is. While the room is an appealingly comfy-looking space of shiny red banquettes, bare timber tables and crowded artworks, it doesn't seem enough to evoke the kind of devotion that this restaurant boasts. Yet Cicciolina is consistently packed out, with small crowds sloshing back aperitifs in the adjoining bar, waiting in hope for a table. Having achieved the gastronomic grail of a seat in the restaurant, the patient few are rewarded with a menu of sumptuous modern Mediterranean cuisine, supplemented by a blackboard packed with specials. Meals might range from hearty classics such as parmesan and sage-crumbed veal to delicate slices of tuna carpaccio with lime-infused olive oil. One of the main draws of Cicciolina is the lovingly assembled list of more than 250 local and international wines.

This place is brilliant, unpretentious, and magic, there's something going on in there. The service is terrible but the environment and the food are amazing, I'll come back as many times as i can. Hidden diamond for sure!

One of Melbourne's best
If you like restaurants that get the important stuff right (food, wine, efficient & knowledgeable service) and you don't give stuff about the million dollar fitout, this is your sort of place. Totally unpretentious but often brilliant, it's the sort of place you can do the big night out or drop in for single course and a glass of wine. The sort of place where an 11:00am coffee can turn into another... followed by (what the heck) a decadently long lunch. It's undoubtedly one of Melbourne's best restaurants. If only it were one of Melbourne's best kept secrets?

It sometimes pays to write an order down
Having dinned here on numerous prior occassions I elected to have a quick bite prior to an early evening engagement. Having selected a sumptuous entree accompanied by a lively pinot I eagerly awaited my main course. And waited. And waited.Unfortunately it was not to be as the order hadn't been conveyed to the kitchen and my time was rapidly running out. Alas, I had to leave with only a "don't patronize me, you ate your entree and drank the wine, no apologies needed for your missed main" comment from the waiter! I was astounded and initially vowed never to return. Wisdom and prior delectable experiences here will see me venture into this establishment in the near future, hopefully to be served by the dutiful ladies who do remember to write orders down! All in all a great place - a shame to be let down by non-caring personnel.

Mmmmmm..
Cicciolina is a cut above the rest in terms of their food, service and menu variety. The Atlantic salmon pasta is to die for and the specials always tantalize the tastebuds. If the restaurant is full, enjoy a drink or two.. or three in the backbar. It's my favourite restaurant in Acland St. You have to check it out!
