There's no denying that the French make some of the world's best pastry, but there's no need for a European jaunt to get your hands on wonderful baked goods. Swanbourne's Choux Cafe is open daily for breakfast and lunch with a wide range of sweet and savoury treats. Fresh baguettes are made up every day, along with beef bourguignon pies, croque monsieurs and homemade pates. For those with a sweet tooth, there are Parisian macarons, madeleines and all manner of tarts.
The man behind the menu is Emmanuel Mollois, a French-born patisserie specialist who worked his way up in European restaurants before stints at Melbourne's La Brasserie and The Willows. As well as heading up the Choux Cafe, he also holds French cooking classes through Subiaco's Kitchen Witch, and has created a cookbook, Et Voila!

Price swinging...
We love the tasty treats at Choux - they are consistently good. Unfortunately, not so for the staff, which can have a direct impact on your pocket change! Some staff are delightfully helpful (both informative and friendly), others a little unhappy and a little too flippant with their pricing decisions. This week, buying a cake for a friend, I was informed that the cakes were fresh. When discovered that they were the day before "use by" I was told I could have it at almost half price. I was then asked whether I'd be eating it that day - I said I was giving it to a friend and I thought so - at which point I was informed it was back to full price! I was running late so paid full price to the unapologetic staff member .. and later made the apologies to my friend for an expensive cake that needed to be eaten that day! This is one of a few funny transactions we've had at this otherwise good little cafe.
