One of Sydney's secret gems, this place may not be to everyone's tastes, but those who like it, love it. And there are plenty of them crowding in here at lunch times, despite its out-of-the-way location. The food is most definitely East-meets-West, with most dishes somewhere between American diner-style fast food and classic Hong Kong comfort food.
The peanut butter and condensed milk toast, for example, and the fried beef steak with spaghetti in black pepper sauce, are not dishes you'd see done in too many other Chinatown restaurants. But they work, somehow, and are incredibly nostalgic, popular meals for the many Hong Kong expats who eat here regularly. The daily set menu is a bargain, and an afternoon tea of Ching Yip's fried chicken wings marinated in soy is one you shouldn't miss.
By way of beverages, the coca cola, served hot and with lemon, is surprisingly yummy and warming on a cold day, and hugely popular, as is the yuanyang (a uniquely Hong Kong-style creation of half tea and half coffee).
