China Plate

A new arrival at the Melbourne Building in 2009, China Plate is a spacious Chinese seafood restaurant that's always ready to fill up your plate. In an exquisite dining room setting, China Plate sets the scene elegantly to get diners in the mood for a super serving of live seafood, or perhaps a tasty meat dish. Fans of yum cha can congregate happily among the carts of China Plate on Sundays.

Yum Cha
China Plate offers a small to moderate range of dishes for Yum Cha (Sundays only). Yum Cha dish prices are $4 (small), $5 (medium), and $6 (large), with 'special' dishes costing more (e.g., $7.80).

Rather unexpectedly, all 6 of our dishes fell into the 'large' and 'special' categories, including dishes that I would normally regard as 'medium' (e.g., vegetable dumplings). This, along with the tea charge of $3 per person, resulted in a surprisingly high bill.

The quality of the food, particularly the various dumpling dishes, was quite good.

However, the mango pudding was easily the worst I've had in my 25 years of Yum Cha experience - it was small and dry, and did not come with condensed milk. Moreover, it was classified as a 'large' dish.

The layout of the restaurant is strange, mainly as a consequence of the awkward interior space in the building. Most of the tables are fine, but unfortunately we were put into the dark, poorly-lit back corner of the restaurant.

Yum Cha options in Canberra are few and far between, and the quality is generally low (especially when compared with Sydney's Chinatown). In view of this, it is probably worthwhile to check out China Plate if you're in Civic on a Sunday.
