Going for the "no mess, no fuss" appeal of a neighbourhood restaurant, China Bar sports a casual, canteen feel and an accessible menu (of which visual representations of the dishes are just one part). Those feeling less adventurous can entertain themselves with Mongolian beef and lemon chicken and rice; salty fish with chicken fried rice or Szechuan-style dumplings in spicy soup are also up for grabs. You'll find specials posted on a colour paper mosaic on the walls, drinks are in a fridge at the back and your order taken at the counter. Simple.

Best in the East
Went to China Bar in Russell street years ago and found it slightly lacking in quality (even for the price). Recently visited the Box Hill 'cafe' and cannot beleive the difference, have been back a number of times now. The roast duck and crispy skin pork noodle soup is a must, very tasty. The quality is exceptional and the servings are more than generous = great value for money. Staff are hospitable and attentive and it's a byo. Meals can at times come out in slightly varying times but in my experience nothing to rate a mention (yet). In short if you do not like this place you may have had an unfortunately atypical experience and I can only urge you to take a greater sample population (try again).

Definitely the best.
The service is really quick, and the meals are outstanding. Definitely one of the best restarants out there. A bit small, but more 'cosy'.

The place looked funky from the outside.
I ordered a starter of spring rolls and vegetables with rice noodles in oyster sauce as the main.
The noodles were boring and bland. I counted the vegetables included in the dish: 1 tiny baby bok choy, 3/4 baby corn, 1.5 slices of carrot and a few pieces of onion.
Half way through the meal my starter was brought out.

China Bar is the greatest!
Have been going there again and again for many years - food is superb, super-fast (and attentive) service, and cheap! Crispy roast pork and duck noodle soup highly recommended, as well as seafood laksa, and roti chanai (beef or chicken). A must!
