Chez Olivier

Surprisingly snug and low-key, this restaurant relies on simple Gallic dishes and a light interior to draw in locals and tourists alike. There are two separate dining areas, so you can drape yourself across a plush lounge or snag one of the simple timber tables. Try the lunchtime pissaladiere: an onion, anchovy and olive tart served on a bed of green salad and semi-dried tomatoes. Dinnertime offers a selection of seafood and beef dishes, including mussels opened in a white wine broth with prosciutto, sausage meat and onion sauce - or as the chef likes to call it, "the French version of the surf 'n' turf".

Pleasant...yes... just pleasant.
I'd never been to Chez Olivier before, but the Glen Eira Rd restaurant came highly recommended, so I thought I'd chance the Greville St version, especially given that France Soir was booked out as usual (some recession!).
We arrived to a friendly reception and were escorted to a table upstairs, adjacent to a birthday dinner for about 14... always a worry. But to their credit, the friendly staff handled it all, including paying attention to us, quite well... although some were visibly stressed.
The Food: Excellent, although I think a bit rushed in order to fit in with the party group, and the beans with our main were forgotten altogether. No tragedy. I dislike beans anyway. :-)
For desert I had a lovely crepe with chocolate and cherries; my partner had cheese. The wrong cheese arrived, but all was fixed with minimal fuss and a friendly smile.
Would I go back? Absolutely, but I'll ask a few more questions about who else is booked for the same sitting.

Lunch with the girls - chez olivier
Booked lunch at Chez Olivier in Glen Eira Rd for a friends birthday - just 3 of us.
The atmosphere was pleasant and cosy. The waiter French, professional, casual and attentive without hovering.
For starters we had the charcuterie - pates. A generous portion of rillettes for my friend and pate de pork for me both served with warm crusty bread. Tasty and a good start to the meal.
For mains we had the salad nicoise topped with real seared tuna that was delicious. I had the noisette de beouf - two noisettes, perfectly cooked and accompanied by salad and a good portion of skinny chips.
For dessert - yes we went the full hog, I can highly recommend the chocolate fondant which is to die for.
Overall great value for money - real French food (I know what I'm talking about) at a very reasonable price.
The wines that were proposed to accompany the meal were of a high quality and we all left having spent the afternoon in a pleasant environment, eating great food and drinking a couple of glasses of good wine.
Best of all we were not bankrupt at the end.
Highly recommend Chez Olivier - we had a lovely time.

Little France in Melbourne!
Absolutely gorgeous little restaurant/bistro! The atmosphere is so french it's ridiculous! The waitress and waiter were both exceptionally fluent in french. This is a good thing, it really added to the place to have such authentic people working there. Some of the other customers who came in, came in and happily conversed in French with the waiters, really made you feel like you had stepped into a French bistro in Paris!

The food was delicious, my mother and I shared a tarte tartin to finish off our meal and the apples just melted in your mouth! Definitely reccomended!
