Breathing new life into a former bank building, Charcoal Lane marks the rebirth of this space as a chic, modern and uniquely Australian diner, adorned with stunning Aboriginal artworks. In fact, Charcoal Lane is an inspired initiative run by Mission Australia and the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service, giving Aboriginal and disadvantaged young people the chance to shine in traineeships and apprenticeships in a fine restaurant setting.
Interestingly, the modern Australian menu mixes Aboriginal and global styles, so you'll find plenty of innovation in dishes like lemon myrtle fish bites with ginger and chilli dip; peppered wallaby tartare with endive salad and hazelnut dressing; and spiced Bendigo duck breast with confit leg parcel and quandong jus.

Unique australian touch
Our waiter was excellent but the food came out a little slowly.
The highlights of the night were the Yabbie, tomato fondue, angel hair, lemon myrtle, baby basil entr?e and the Chocolate terrine, marquise, fondant, kaffir lime leaf, sour cherry sorbet dessert.
The decor was very plain and the noise level quite loud, but I would return based on the excellent service our waiter gave us, and the best dishes of the night.

Great service and some food highlights. Worth a return meal
Firstly, a great re-use of a building that builds on strong connections to the Indigenous community. Secondly, fantastic service by young staff who have been well trained. Wasn't intrusive but very attentive and professional. Entree/appetisers (lemon myrtle fish, yam fritters, tortellini) were the highlights and were served quickly. Mains (salmon, rabbit) were very well presented but were a little lacking in flavour. A vegetarian main on the menu would be good (there was a special). Lovely simple but well executed desserts. Not yet licenced but that helps keep the bill down for now. Lots of promise and excellent social responsibility aims to add to the experience.
