Char Restaurant @ Admiralty

Those who have ventured down Brissie-way might be familiar with the meat-temple sibling of this stylish Darwin restaurant. Owner John Kilroy has swept together a sizable collection of awards for his Brisbane steak restaurant Cha Cha Char and has brought his fine-dining experience and love of all things beef to the steamy shores of Darwin. Char is housed in Darwin's heritage-listed Old Admiralty House and the bright and airy restaurant benefits from both the house's original features and its stunning water views.

This restaurant continues the meat-centric tradition of its Queensland sibling, with a gourmet steak menu that outlines the pedigree of each steak for the true meat connoisseur. Aside from beef, Char thoughtfully offers a small vegetarian menu along with numerous seafood and poultry dishes, using plenty of ingredients from the Top End. Apart from the steaks, the meals are designed to share, so the whole table can get a taste of dishes such as the house-made crocodile and crab lasagne; or Northern Territory buffalo with wild bush berries.

A little hit and miss
An early booking at 6pm and the staff were still in set up mode so a long wait for our first drink. We were seated right by the reception and it was a little chaotic but they were fully booked. Service was a little hit and miss with all of the 5 who served us pleasant but not one of them appearing to "own" our table. I ordered the Wagyu rump which was recommened to be cooked medium and clearly something went a miss in the kitchen -what i ended up with was a very overcooked piece of what resmebled topside roast- not sure where it went wrong and the waitress graciously took it back and gave both of us a free desert, but still charged for the uneaten Wagyu. On balance though the Wagyu cost $20 more than the 2 deserts combined so perhaps not the best way to handle it. My dinner companions steak was well cooked and entrees were fine so perhaps just a bad night but not one I would necessarily chance again

Warm Night - Warm Restaurant
Service was excellent. We didn't book and unfortunately had to sit outside, but fans made it easy to enjoy the atmosphere. 4 people - 4 different dishes - all tried others and agreed that food cooked to perfection. Would advise southerners (like us) to book early for inside, during summer.
Great restaurant.

Great place
Dinner with sunset view over Darwin Harbour, hot and humid night, but outside fans available on request. Too hot for wine, so cold beer and fabulous cocktail with vodka, cranberry juice, lime and loads of mint leaves served in a parfait style glass - just so refreshing for the evening. Entree of plump juicy scallops on crisp skin pork belly slivers with a side of grated apple to complement the pork - scrumptious. Mains were delicious Spanish Mackerel with salad and chips, and mouth watering beef fillet with interesting choice of vegetables. Service was friendly and helpful, with several passing jovial remarks as the waitresses and waiters tripped past our table. All in all, a wonderful Darwin experience and will certainly recommend to any friends visiting Darwin in the future.

Extremely poor customer service
I am from interstate and had heard good things about this restaurant, so two of my business colleagues and I decided to give it a try before we dined one of our clients the following night. We hadn't booked, but then again the restaurant was mostly empty. When we arrived, we were ignored by the waiting staff. When we were eventually served, we were directed to a POS terminal at another part of the restaurant as we had requested to sit outside. A waiter was standing at the terminal, and completely ignored us. He eventually looked to us and asked us to wait until he had finished. A few seconds later, another staff member came to us and asked if we required assistance. We asked to be seated at a table outside, and were told that we had to wait 15 minutes. As the restaurant was empty, we (naturally) asked why. The waitress bizarrely stated that she had to take food orders from two other tables before she could seat us, and that it would take 15-20 minutes to do so. We looked at each other - puzzled as one might expect - and said that we don't mind waiting, and that we were happy to sit at a table until she was ready (presumably to set the table). Again, she said that she could not seat us until she had taken food orders from the other two tables and that we were welcome to book and return in 15-20 minutes. I don't quite understand the logic here, because we then proceeded to walk out of the restaurant and spent our money at a very nice Thai cafe on Mitchell St. Neither I nor my colleagues have never experienced such poor service before and will not return. If you are after a restaurant that is more suitable for business affairs, consider Pee Wee's, Hanuman or the new Italian restaurant at Skycity.

Top notch Darwin eatery
A fantastic location and an extremely well-equipped bar and restaurant make Char an unmissable Darwin experience.
Fantastic during the dry season and unavoidable during the wet season, Char won't disappoint any foodie.
Steaks are their forte, which makes it extraordinarily hard to try out the fresh wild barra, mud crab and other non-red meats.
The entrees are an absolute treat. The beef cheek spring rolls are immaculate. You cannot miss them.
Drinks are many and varied and the wine list is extensive. As with 99% of Darwin venues though, you will pay for your wines.
Service is surprisingly good, which is a hard feat in Darwin with the transient population.
