Catalina

Since opening as under its current moniker in 1994, Catalina has sat back and listened as food critics repeatedly sang its praises. Set in a location to rival most others, the interior was designed to act as a blank canvas for the sweeping harbour views, with polished wooden floorboards and simple white linen-shrouded tables.

Catalina's executive chef, Paul McMahon, offers guests a seasonal Mediterranean-influenced menu. While it is not strictly a seafood menu, there is a strong aquatic representation, including decadent Sydney rock oysters, shucked on the premises.

The virtually uninterrupted views, framed by the floor-to-ceiling windows, offer diners the pleasant distraction of the entertaining pelicans that frequent this section of Sydney Harbour. This is a stunning venue for whiling away the lunchtime hours, but it is during the early evening that it truly shines, when the Rose Bay harbour is set afire with the majestic reds, oranges and purples of a Sydney sunset.

Truly Memorable
I can't really believe I'm the first to rate this restaurant...

I had dinner here with a couple of friends back in January and it was a wonderful, memorable experience - the food is delicate, the wine varied and interesting(knowledgable sommelier too, which you expect at ths calibre of restaurant). I had oysters to start and twice-cooked duck for main, shich was perfectly cooked. A dessert tasting plate is the way to go to end the meal - lots of nice bursts of flavour and texture.

The serene interior allows the sea view to be the main focus - a stormy Sydney sky during our visit. We watched lightning the whole evening! (I'm an interior designer, so I appreciated the architectural simplicty. Very nice)

This is a top-class Sydney experience, along the lines of close neighbour Pier Rose Bay (also a great restaurant).

Save up and go, I say.
