Carpaccio
Finding an Italian restaurant on Norton Street may be like shooting fish in a barrel, but a top-notch restaurant in any area deserves a bit of recognition. Over the years, the site has played host to a number of restaurants including La Fontana (in reference to the water feature that still remains) and Caffe Norton. When the current owners, Giovanni and Nicole Panetta, took over in 2005, they set about giving the place a much needed renovation, opening Carpaccio Ristorante as a more upmarket Italian eatery. The white on white decor may seem a little understated, but definitely falls into the simple yet elegant category. The leafy outdoor dining area is perfect for the warmer months, but gas heaters are in place to ensure you don't miss out during winter. As you would expect, the restaurant's namesake features heavily on the menu, which has been designed with sharing in mind. The signature dish is a carpaccio of John Dory and smoked salmon, but a more traditional beef carpaccio, served with a basil pesto, warm blue cheese and caper sauce really hits the spot. If you opt for individual mains, there are plenty of intriguing and worthy options, such as the roasted duck breast with pork and pistachio sausage, cavalo nero and blood orange jus; or the house-made ravioli of roast duck and mushroom in a pancetta, wild mushroom and broad bean broth.
