The curiously named Carlton Yacht Club (or CYC to locals) draws its inspiration from the tale of a historic Melbourne entrepreneur called Sam Nelson who unsuccessfully petitioned the city's council to indulge his eccentric enthusiasm for yachting by building a canal from Port Phillip Bay to Lygon Street, Carlton. Honouring Nelson's dream with a Nautical theme, CYC stands on the old grounds of his 1927 Nelson Enterprises premises, attracting an arty and sophisticated dining crowd from the nearby theatre and cinema scene.
The international cuisine draws on the rich European tradition of Carlton's Italian scene and owner Andrew Leonada's Greek Cypriot heritage with such gourmet offerings as thin crust pizza topped with Cypriot haloumi, tomato and crushed mint; toasted bruschetta; seafood dim sum selections or hot Turkish bread with freshly made dips. For dessert, sit al fresco and share a cheese platter with roasted almonds and fig paste or suck up a rich creamy cocktail like the death by Tim Tam - a thick muddle of Baileys, vanilla vodka, butterscotch schnapps, creme de cacoa, crushed Tim Tams, ice cream and milk, topped with thick drizzles of caramel and chocolate sauce which will leave you sweetly sailing.
