Cape Cod

Cape Cod, as the name implies, is all about seafood and it is bringing the coast to Canberra. The interior is casual cool and has been eclectically assembled with nautical details that somehow look perfectly at home with the glittering chandelier and golden wallpaper. All of these disparate elements combine to create a comfortable and intimate atmosphere. The concise wine list is transcribed onto a large chalkboard that surrounds the bar, detailing several good Australian wines, with half the selection available by the glass.

The menu, as you would expect, predominantly consists of seafood and it changes constantly - a testament to Cape Cod's use of fresh produce, as well as the chef's creativity. The list of dishes is diverse, from simple offerings such as fish and chips with house-made tartare sauce, through to the Asian-influenced warm salad of cuttlefish and pork belly with sweet yellow bean soy. Not content simply to cook you the freshest seafood in town, Cape Cod is looking at introducing 'home packs' which will include fresh seafood for people to take home and cook themselves. All up, Cape Cod is providing Canberra with a gastronomic sea change.

Cape Cod; small intimate and tucked away in a shopping centre
Cape Cod is a 40 person restaurant in Deakin. Friendly staff and a well rounded menu of seafood including salmon, blue eye cod, kingfish, flat head etc. An interesting deviation of a Thai Crab cake, Pacific Oysters and more. My fish had a bit too much salt for my liking but some others may prefer that.

I attended a Wednesday night and occupancy was about 50% and the "rush" started at 7.30pm. Friday and Saturday night - bookings essential otherwise you're turned away.

Wine list is available and many wines by the glass as well as boutique beers which are perfect to wash down Cape Cod's Fish and chips or with their "Chunky Fries".

Service was very good. Attentive and friendly staff but during peak periods service levels could drop. Ambiance was very pleasant, candles on each table, soft comfortable chairs furnishing and some window seats with cushions.

Cape Cod is not cheap. Entree A$15-19 (US$13-17) and mains are A$21 to $35 (US$21-35).

Still, despite the price, Cape Cod is well worth the visit for those craving seafood in Canberra.

Can't wait to go back !
We read the reviews in this website and went to Capecod for lunch. We couldn't wait to go their again for dinner. It was the best meal I have had in a long time. All of us loved our entrees, esp the fish. Food were very simple but delicious and ingeniously cooked. Service was good.

Chips were the highlight!
This restaurant seems earnest enough and the staff are friendly and seem well-meaning. However, the food is very disappointing and this restaurant is not the saviour to finding decent seafood in Canberra. Both fish dishes we had were quite ordinary - one was $30, not particularly generous serving size, not particularly fresh fish, burnt skin, and apart from the burnt taste, pretty much flavourless! The restaurant's signature version of 'fish and chips' seemed more promising - $20 and a generous size. However, the fish was most unpleasant, and all I could eat were the chips, which were excellent!

Great dine! Great experience!!
We went to Canberra on holiday and were recommended the name of Cape Cod by the hotel reception. The food was excellent, probably the best seafood we had had in last few years. The friendly staff made the atmosphere more appealing. We had a lovely chat with a lovely girl; impressed by her electrifying movement of service, command over colleagues and friendliness with guests. We really had a good time and wish to dine there someday again.

Very good... but
The good things: the food is very good - particularly the beer battered fish & chips. The waiters are friendly and helpful and the atmosphere quite pleasant.
The bad things: the wine list is quite limited and falls into the "trendy" chardonnay trap. The menu can only be viewed by walking around the side of the open bar/kitchen area and reading from the blackboard, which is difficult to see and read. The restaurant is quite small and the outside dining area surface is very uneven and could pose a problem for some. I have dined there on 4 occasions. Three were very good and one quite mediocre. The 4th time the fish & chips were quite soggy and the risotto had far too much chilli.

All in all, I will definitely eat there again and will consider the less than excellent meal I had on my last visit was a one off.
