Canton's menu draws on Malaysian, Singaporean and Chinese culinary influences. Representing all of these countries is a big ask, but thanks to an extensive menu - incredibly large for such a small restaurant - and blackboard specials, it does them all justice. Chef Jimmy Hui's speciality is the chilli rock salt squid, but the cheerful staff know all the best dishes and are happy to make recommendations.

Best in District
The food here beats anything I've sampled in the far dearer, flashier joints in the ACT. This is evidenced by the number of Canberrans who cross the border to sample it. Vanessa is the most charming hostess. Unlicensed, but the Royal is right across the road. This is really a top spot and thoroughly recommended.
