Caffe Salina

The block of shops beachside on Bronte Road is literally wall-to-wall cafes these days and it's hard to distinguish between them. Salina stands out from the rest, from the friendly casualness of its young owners to the inventive simplicity and flavours of the food. Its point of differentiation is the re-workings of Sicilian dishes. Check out the biggest meatballs in town: excellent-quality, just-cooked mince holding the surprise of a pea and mozzarella stuffing that's saturated in cooking juices till the whole is juicilicious. A lighter favourite with regulars are the corn fritters, made with freshly shucked corn off the cob and Spanish and white onions, served with bacon or smoked salmon. Eat in, eat out on the sidewalk, or hedge your bets and sit at the bench looking out across the sweep of park to the beach. Run by a young married couple, Paul and Maree, the atmosphere is light and casual with idiosyncratic touches, such as the '60s kitsch of the decorated table water, the contrasting silver and peppermint green interior - and an annual Anti-Valentine's Day Ball with entry restricted to love tragics.

The local's local
I've been to a few of the cafes at Bronte Beach for coffee and breakfast after ambling through the Sculptures by the Sea exhibition. This was my first time for dinner and I walked away very impressed.

Paul, who runs the place, is friendly (and quirky) and made my friend and I feel very at home. And that's the main attraction of caffe Salina - you actually feel like you're in your own or someone else's dining room. It's clearly the local's local... complete with blankets to keep you warm when the wind picks up.

As for the food, we both ordered the lamb shanks plus steamed green veggies. There were two enormous shanks in each serve on top of piles of mash. It was delicious, homemade food. Unfortunately we couldn't eat it all and had to ask for a doggy bag. Our two leftover shanks came back on a plate wrapped in glad wrap with the simple request to return the plate the next day. How good's that?!

I'd like to try some of the neighbouring cafes & restaurants for dinner but I'd definitely go back to Salina.
