Joining the highly reputable stable of Vue de Monde restaurants and cafes (which include Bistro Vue, Cafe Vue on Little Collins Street, Cafe Vue on St Kilda Road, and of course, Vue de Monde itself), Shannon Bennett's Cafe Vue at Heide is yet another example of fine, fresh and seasonal French cuisine delivered in an equally amiable locale. Lodged in the Heide Museum of Modern Art, this cafe makes an artful job of its food offerings, sourcing produce from the on-site vegetable garden, and allowing diners to laze about with their lunch boxes in Heide's beautiful Sculpture Garden. From baguettes to pies to souffles, Cafe Vue at Heide offers up an enciting range of foods sure to satiate art lovers and kindred spirits at the Heide.

wanted to like it
After much anticipation, we rocked up to Cafe Vue for Sunday brunch. The experience was the kind of chaos that can be casual and charming if the food lives up to its reputation, but unfortunately that was not the case. I will start by saying the other meals looked nice. Poached eggs were wobbly and glistening and got good raps from other diners. Burgers being delivered to other tables looked yummy. Kids burger was quite impressive. But oh, what a let down with the corn fritters and bacon I ordered. Tough tasteless corn kernels in very dark brown crusty (deep fried?) patties of I don't know what. Potato? Flour? Egg? No enjoyment factor at all. Did make me think of the vegetarian burgers you get at a sausage sizzle, except those are actually tastier. Only reason I did not give food one star was because the others found their meals acceptable. Service was hit and miss - once orders were placed, food showed up. Hardest part was getting someone to take your order. I so wanted to like this place but just felt really let down. May be tempted to try it again one day (glutton for punishment?) but with so many other places in Melbourne, probably won't. If you go, hope your experience is better than mine.

worth a visit
A lovely setting and we enjoyed the al a carte menu, duck pie and french onion soup was very good. Service was terribly slow. They gave us our main course before our entree and we had to hunt them down to get coffee and dessert. It took over an hour to get our food even though we only ordered simple baguettes and pies. I would go back just for the nice setting and food.

Cafe Vue @ Heide.
Came here on Australia day after booking a week previous, please note you must book here, i have never seen so many knockbacks. This day represented 1 month after opening and im glad to say it is already a well oiled machine. Outstanding food and service located in a giant art precinct, what more could one hope for. I will definately be back and i did not encounter any of the problems faced by the previous member. Just excellence.

Outstanding food - let down by service
I have to admit I had great expectations of this place, and I wasn't let down by the food. However, I started getting a bit worried when we weren't greeted at the door. When I finally was able to get a waiter's attention and explaining that we had a booking for lunch I was gestured over to our table. The cutlery on the table was dirty, which the waiter promptly fixed, and we ordered the menu de jour, some pomme frites and wine. 30 minutes later the food arrived - to the table next to us. The waiter realised the problem, a little too late... He swept their meals away and then offered the pomme frites to us!! After sending him away, we finally got our meals, after waiting another 10 minutes. The food was excellent, but worth the wait? The overall experience was also let down by uncleared tables around the place. More diners were coming in and not being acknowledged at the door, and started to help themselves to tables - and we watched the awkward spiel from the poorly trained staff about the tables being booked. This was quite distracting. You'd expect something a little more professional given the whole Vue brand, but it was a total let-down.
