Cafe Pronto

This heritage treasure has had some refurbishment done, but not at the expense of its traditional charm. There's a balcony looking out over Mandurah Estuary, while the courtyard out the back is a huge draw for summertime alfresco dining. Entertainment is provided by jazz singers on Friday and Saturday nights; listen from the comfort of the couches, which hold prime position in front of the fireplace on chilly nights.

Memorable but for the wrong reasons
My Partner and I attended this restaurant for a Friday lunch on a lovely Mandurah day. We ordered a bruchetta that didn't really live up to its price tag but was average. It was lucky the day was nice and the drinks were cold as this is when the day took a turn for the worse. Being Good Friday we ordered a margarita pizza I wish it had come in a box as it may have offered something on the table with taste as the pizza certainly had none. When I thought my experience couldn't get any worse the waiter proceeded to pull down the blinds blocking the only thing this establishment had going for it, the view. In a town that has some great and some not so great places to eat this one definitely sits at the bottom of the not so great.

Great night out
There were four of us out for dinner, after a stressful week. We were welcomed into the restaurant with an inviting atmosphere, like longtime friends. Drinks by the fire listening to a cool old bloke on guitar and harmonica. Service was prompt, the entrees came very quickly. The crab and corn cakes were delicious, as was my wifes calamari. The Rankin Cod for my main was mouth watering and certainly the best fish I have had in a long time. My friends had the scotch fillet and the paella and we are still talking about it today, the paella topped with a Pemberton marron was a standout. We didn't have space for dessert but we will be back soon to try them, however the coffee was a great way to finish, I can see why they won the barista award. Definitely somewhere to visit to relieve stress!

Disappointment
The food is terribly overpriced for what you get. I had a salmon dish - $39. It was tiny, flavourless and the fish was dry as a bone. 2 x meals, 4 drinks $150.
We had a cocktail or two, but those were also overpriced and not made properly.
Hugely overpriced when you consider the waitress didn't even get the water & pour it (apparantly we have to do that ourselves). Other restaurants with $40 price tags on their dishes treat you like royalty...
Pronto's don't even pour the wine, never mind the water!
With pricing like that, you expect a certain level of service, food and ambience. None of which were present at Pronto's.
No one offered dessert or coffee, but to be honest we couldn't wait to get out.
We felt more of a burden than a valued customer, and they didn't even look that busy to be honest. I work in another restaurant in Perth and we're taught to value every customer - after all they're choosing to spend their time & money with us.

Not happy birthday
I had table for 11, my daughter was given some pencils and colouring paper on our arrival, very nice seating. However we waited a long time for our orders, though the children received their pizza in record time! I ordered Thai mussels for main, the bowl was overloaded with them, even the unopen ones were served! The broth was too salty. Other dishes on the menu just weren't that appetising and over priced.

Lunchtime disappointment
Well we walked in and it looked so promising. This cafe is huge, there was plenty of room inside but we were seated outside on a cold wintry day. Interesting. The two female waitresses we spoke to were helpful. Our oysters were nice - the saving grace of our lunch break. I ordered the chicken and prawn penang curry. The way I described this curry is a jar of Kan Tong. It would have to be the most disgusting meal i have ever eaten and for over $30! The prawn pizza had a lot of prawns but lacked flavour. This place is way over priced possibly due to the renos they have had done.

Breakfast for two
What a wonderful place to enjoy a lovely breakfast. The view is fantastic and the atmosphere relaxed. The refurbishment looks sensational - very modern with a touch of the old charm that has always been there. I have eaten at Pronto's many times, though never breakfast, and in the main enjoyed great food and good service. On this occassion both my wife and I requested eggs Benedict. Very very good hollandaise sauce - just the right amount of lemon juice to give it a good kick and seasoned to perfection. Unfortunately chef overcooked the poached eggs (the most important part of the dish) but a choice of smoked salmon base instead of ham was a wonderful twist on the traditional serve. I also ordered a side of what was described on the menu as "wild mushrooms" but unfortunately they were just button mushrooms you can pick up from any supermarket. I know we will return again in the near future for another crack - though probably dinner this time.
