Nestled in the heart of the Blackheath township is this sunny gem of a cafe with a passion for wholesome food and friendly service. This cosy cafe began life as a beachside venue on the shores of Bronte, before the heart and soul of the operation, Gerhard Hassler, decided to make a change and move to the chilly but close-knit community of Blackheath.
Taking up residence in a converted post office (a space it shares with a delightfully twee antique store), Memento was a favourite with locals and tourists alike from day dot. The small interior, which is warmed by a hearty open fire in the cooler months, is balanced by the quaint and flower-filled front courtyard. The east-facing space ensures that, even on a cold day, this is the best place in town to soak up any available sun on the mountaintop.
While the Blue Mountains are certainly known for their cafe culture (what else are you going to do when it's five degrees outside and hailing?), this European-inspired charmer serves up more than your average cafe fare. Their BLATs (bacon, lettuce, tomato and avocado, for the uninitiated) are worth crossing a valley for, with heavenly oven-roasted bacon and some kind of magical onion jam. The menu also includes highlights such as Hungarian goulash, ricotta tarts, a well-stocked mezze plate and a delightful black forest gateau. There's a wide selection for vegetarian folk and those edgy coffee drinkers can rest assured their caffeinated beverages are in good hands.
Memento is one of those places day trippers rave about to their friends while the locals make their religious visits feeling very smug indeed.
