While founding partner and chef Marco Lori has moved on from this cafe, it continues to serve up the modern Italian cuisine for which it has become known. The room is a slick space for a casual meal, featuring dark, sophisticated shades and textured fabrics on the walls, while rectangular Lego-like light fittings hang from the ceiling. Tuck into plates of cheesy gnocchi, pizzas and simple Italian mains.

What s shocker
After asking 3 times for a bottle of water - I got up myself to get a bottle from the bar - only for the male barman to say - "that bottle of water is not for you" beggars belief I know. Then the same man refused to accept my Entertainment book voucher (buy 1 meal get one free) His reason - ($15 hamburger, chips and salad is not considered a main meal) and its not an entre can someone please tell me what it is. Friendly waiting staff only to be let down by the rude man behind the bar. Wont be back.

If you want the best Cafe experience in the North........
Firstly, I feel I need to respond to some of the negative comments posted by obviously naive diners who have unrealistic expectations of a simple local Cafe in the northern suburbs.....GET SOME PERSPECTIVE!!!! I don't believe the current owners of Cafe Matto ever promoted and advertised false dreams of 5 star dining and service which would rival restaurant's such Bistro Guillaume or Ezards. Simple, affordable, welcoming, relaxed, tasty food are just some of th things you will discover at Cafe Matto, nothing more and nothing less. What it is, is an uncompromising local cafe which prides itself on great coffee and unpretentiousness... Cheers!

The BEST I have experienced in a while.
We recently moved into the area and wanted to try the locals first. Last night was one of the most memorable nights in a while; I had the grain fed porterhouse steak while my husband had the Mediterranean chicken, WOW. We were greeted by two of the young owners who made us feel at home. We asked for a bottle of red and the owner recommended a cab/merlot. Two bottles later, a steak and chicken we simply couldn t leave without trying the chocolate pizza. That was the icing on the cake. We are taking friends for breakfast over the weekend. Absolutely fantastic and highly recommend it.

Wink wink, nod nod
Planning to spending the day with a special friend at Heide, I decided to start it at Cafe Matto. I wasn't sure what to expect given the reviews below, but hey, how busy can a place be for Tues breakie. The decision was a good one, with the food & service acceptable - given we were more interested in chatting & in no real hurry. The Florentine eggs were ok, big enough to set us up for the day but small enough to not to detract from a planned special lunch. The only real negatives were a cold "flat white" - replaced without question, & getting the bill - I am not sure what the waiter was thinking about my obvious eye contact, but all I wanted was the bill. In summary, not too bad for a surburban cafe & I would return for a mid week breakie if the opportunity arose.

Never again!
I will never be eating at Cafe Matto again. As a local it was convenient for me to dine there. The service was not up to scratch and the meals we ordered were terrible. We complained about our hot chocolates and there was absolutely no care even from the management staff. It was all one big joke.
I don't understand why cafes can't provide decent service and semi-friendly wait staff? With the competition the way it is around the Heidelberg area I wouldn't be surprised if more diners followed suit and stopping eating at this restaurant.
Joke on you Matto!

APPALLED!
Lured by the appeal of The Chopping Block, some friends and I decided to go to Cafe Matto today. This was our first mistake. Our second mistake was ordering there. The service was terrible, admittedly I cannot fault the young waitress who greeted us, but the quality of service stopped there. It took ages to take our order in a seemingly empty restaurant, the order took far too long to arrive and when it eventually arrived, the quality was appalling. After deciding not to consume the substandard food we were served, the wait staff continually bypassed our table, failing to collect our dishes which we quite obviously had no intention of finishing and attempted to make this clear to our waitress, who didn't quite get the hint. Whilst the decor was quite modern and the toilets were nice and clean, the atmosphere was not enough to make the experience enjoyable. When the dishes were finally cleared, virtually untouched, no questions as to why this was the case, we complained to a man who purported to be the owner. He was not only disinterested in our complaint, he offered no explaination, no apology and no concession to a group of very unhappy customers. We unwillingly paid the full amount for items which were barely touched and which were of a completely unacceptable standard, particularly given the price paid NOT to consume them. Having significant experience in corporate hospitality myself I am astounded that an owner could be so rude as to completely disregard his customers. Myself and my friends are local to the area and will not be returning to this establishement. We hope nobody else receives such appalling service in the future. I am disappointed, disgusted and upset that we were subjected to such treatment when we had such high expectations. Obviously the owner is not interested in providing exceptional customer service to his customers. Customer service goes a long way in this business and it would serve him well to learn that.

Chef Marco Lori has left Matto
I first ate at Cafe Matto shortly after it opened. We were drawn by the promise of gnocchi, reviewed elsewhere as "fluffy pillows of joy".
It was so good, I continued visiting just for the 4-cheeses gnocchi. Last night, it had all changed.
The "four cheeses" were now "two cheeses and breadcrumbs" (this is on the menu), the service quality has become slow and lacking in attention. The waiting staff did not listen when I asked to have my wine poured at the table, and freshly ground pepper is no longer offered.
We waited 45 minutes for our meal and were thinking about cancelling our meal by the time it arrived.
The gnocchi were "soggy lumps of disappointment". The rich, creamy cheese sauce that coated each gnocchi was now a watery puddle that did nothing to disguise the grey and heavy gnocchi.
I asked if the cafe had changed chef or ownership (we understood the chef was part owner), because of the drop in food quality and service. The manager said there was no change of owner, but admitted the chef had left, and the new chef had only been around 3-4 months.
Paying $18 per meal (before wine) for a poor gnocchi and an average pizza tht would have cost us $11 at the local pizza shop was a let down.
If anybody knows where Marco Lori has gone, please let me know - I miss his "little fluffy pillows of joy"!

Food Great - Service not great
Just came home from Cafe Matto to celebrate my wife's birthday. Food was great, steak was tender, wife's fish fresh. Best balsamic vineger in the world! Didn't enjoy being 3 tables away from a group of giggling, overly noisy schoolgirls, which didn't seem to bother the chef or waitstaff. One of the waitstaff, when asked what was in the antipasto, said 'salami and...I can find out if you really want me to'. Don't like to put the waitstaff to too much trouble, but all that was needed was a notepad! Will definitely try again as food was very, very good. Hope the service is better.
