This Lygon Street mainstay has proudly kept its old-school milk bar style, with a smattering of tables out front and pool tables to the rear. Cakes and slices are on display at the counter to tempt you with your coffee purchase, and the menu is scrawled across blackboards above the cash register.

A hidden classic
I and a small crowd of friends stumbled upon Cafe L'Amour on a late Saturday night, looking for somewhere to go after a good meal at Kaki di Hatti nearby. The cafe was quiet, only patronised by an elderly, content-looking Italian couple having a quiet beer (and without exchanging a word with each other during our whole stay). In the back room, card games and pool were played, but we didn't visit the games space this time.
The coffees and dessert liqueur we had were excellent, but what really was special about this little cafe was the atmosphere; it is a 24-hour venue which has been on Lygon Street since the 1950s! The friendly waiter behind the bar gladly told us about the history of the place. We also got introduced to the smily owner who happened to be there at the time.
Dark and a bit worn out, with patrons who have probably been visiting for decades and simple interior (including a fridge most likely from the original opening year) and a cosy pot belly fire, this is Melbourne soul. For a moody and meditative moment (or to work on your next script), visit.
