To the uninitiated, Norton Street can appear to be a tedious stretch of Italian restaurants, offering join-the-dots Italian fare set to the background hum of Saturday night P-plate traffic. Cafe La Vigna avoids the pounding car stereos, being located in Leichhardt's Italian Forum. From the cafe's alfresco tables, diners can wander over to the fountain for a ciggie break, look up at the surrounding apartments (their balconies facing into the square, piazza style) or just quietly eavesdrop on the conversations from the adjacent restaurants.
Those who are looking for traditional pastas and risotti here won't be disappointed, with the usual suspects lined up on the menu. The mains also include tried-and-tested faves (parmigiana, saltimbocca), but shake things up a bit with an injection of Greek and even Mexican flavours. The platters are a highlight, rescuing the indecisive from post-order regret with massive plates of varied meat and seafood nibbles.

A great disappointment
My boyfriend and I have been dining here for many years and have always had a great night out, hence the decision to book my birthday party there earlier this year.
The food was great but the service was questionable. It was a hot night and alchohol was flowing freely, when asked several times for jugs of water we were told they were unavailable as there were not enough jugs to go around. Eventually our guests were served warm tap water in warm glasses. Also, the airconditioning wasn't that great and the doors at the front of the restaurant were only opened after being asked several times again.

La Superb!
My partner and I have been going to La Vigna since moving to Sydney seven years ago. The service is nothing less than excellent, the food is delicious and the restaurant and surrounding areas of the forum make you feel as though you've temporarily stepped into a part of Italy.
We have enjoyed romantic dinners and have had fantastic parties there with larger groups. In summer, the alfreso dining area is the best! If you're lucky, there may be music entertainment in the forum and the alfresco setting guarantees you a front seat to the show.
Having been to every restaurant in the Italian Forum La Vigna is STILL the best! In fact, we're headed there tonight! I thoroughly recommend you experience it!
