Those in the know can't go past the lunch specials at Cafe di Stasio. Dining at any time is a true Italian experience - the food, the service and the overall atmosphere make this venue stand out. Slightly dim and romantic, the simple decor of white linen and wooden chairs is broken by backlit masks and funky table lamps. The comfortable space is matched by comfortable food. Defined as modern Italian, the menu is full of delicious and very approachable dishes, from carbonara or veal parmigiana to a tender, red venison carpaccio. The service is also reassuringly consistent. Bow-tied waiters are friendly and accommodating, greeting regulars with genuine smiles.

Very good restaurant
I enjoyed dinner here last night. Great atmosphere albeit very loud you could hardly hear each other. Food was excellent, loved the Octopus and the Pasta was excellent although I was still huritng at paying $40 for pasta, however it tasted great. Doesn't have the Ambience, Range of Dishes and Furniture of a Rockpool but it's a good place to go if you like Italian food. Change the chairs though they are cheap and uncomfortable.

Unexpected discovery
Thanks to our concierge, we were introduced to this very interesting establishment. I do not agree with the comments that the prices are too high and the portions are not too large either.
In this country, we have been conned by the need to have gigantic portions and at the same time expect to pay next to nothing for it - Maccas and Woolies ahve a lot to answer for. Melbourne is a wonderful city for food and this a great example of someone doing it well and we need more like them.
My wife and I enjoyed the Roast Duck as well as the Porchetta main courses at $41 and $43 respectively. The presentaiton was simple, well portioned (as opposed to flapping over the edges of the plate), very tasty and very filling. We have enjoyed better meals in other places, but then again, we have ahd so much worse as well.
Wines were pricey, but on the other hand, the wines recommended to us were outstanding and perfect with our meals
The service was excellent, understated and very obliging. The restaurant was absolutely packed to the rafters so obviously there are plenty of others who share the same thoughts.

DISAPPOINTING
We were very disappointed in the $35.00 dollar lunch that is offered. The servings were just too small and while it was two courses we left feeling ripped off and hungry.

They have got it!
Simply Di Stasio is a cut above the rest for Italian dining bayside. The food was divine. Our entree of parmesan and herb-crusted scallops on the shell was out of this galaxy. Our mains equally delivered on our table of 8. The service was outstanding and dynamic. The waiters seamlessly sweep in and around the table without interruption. This is true service and we could all see why the Maitre d' is well awarded in her field. The waiter we had was great at suggesting Italian and French bottles of wine, without attempting to have us on the high side of price list. The dining area, while very cosy adds to the ambience and synergy of the experience. Well done Cafe di Stasio...you had 8 very satisfied customers this evening.

Something spectacular, something not
Went with a group of friends for dinner. The crayfish omelette entree was superb, and the rabbit main was pretty good too. I thought both dishes were a decent size, so unlike other reviewers I wasnt disappointed or left feeling hungry. However, the profiteroles dessert was very disappointing - boring and rather tasteless, and the other desserts didnt look much either. I think for a restaurant of this standard they could do with a better pastry chef! The atmosphere was loud and busy, and with a table of six it was hard to have a conversation with everyone as a result, but for me this didnt detract too much from the occasion (however it did bug others in my party). The waiters were warm and friendly, which in my book is part of di Stasio's charm.

The perfect celebration
Service was excellent, staff polite and knowledgeable. Meals weren't huge but were quite rich so you wouldn't have wanted more. Left the restaurant feeling satisfied but not stuffed. Got quite busy but staff kept up with the pace. Extensive menu & specials with something to suit everyones tastes. Is the perfect place to go to celebrate. Would definitely go back again.

Great food tiny portions
We had 2 of their most popular dishes, the food was very good but the portions were tiny. Full size prices $37 and $41 for the mains we ordered) with half size portions. Even with dinner and dessert I still left hungry and I am a 47 kg girl! The service was perfect and the waiter gave great recommendations. The food is worth going back for if you are a light eater or willing to order multiple mains.

Disgusted and disillusioned diners
We decided to go to Cafe de Stasio because it had been recommended. The entrees arrived and all were overpriced for what they were. Baked oysters (over $40 for eight), were baked with far too much worcestershire sauce (salty - salty). Main meal of rabbit was tough and sauce like water. Potatoes had been deep fried and were dark brown and quite unpalatable. Wine was outrageously overpriced - cheapest Italian red was $90 per bottle. You can buy the same bottle in Italy for around $10 - it must have flown out here in First Class. To sum it up, we were charged $140 per head and couldn't eat the food.

A place for celebrations
We were invited to a birthday celebration at Di Stasio. It was refreshingly different from the many cold uninspired canteen-like venues. Being of European origin we really enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, the good food, the polite manners of the waiters and the wine card - although we didn't quite understand why the wine comes in an open bottle with a hand crafted label? We are used to bottles with winery labels, being opened at the table. Still it was to be accepted by the guest which is fair enough. Thanks to the excellent service for a great evening.

Having built the occasion up for several days the food and service at Cafe di Stasio was extremely over-rated. Entree: The octopus was chewy and presentation of this dish was very average. Main: Braised lamb. I have seriously tasted better food for $10 at a pub - the anchovy flavour was completely missing and the lamb represented more of a stew than any sort of shank. An over-priced meal designed for those whose aim of the evening is to rise up the social pecking order rather than enjoy quality Italian food.

Home away from Home
This restaurant has been a favourite of mine for many years, and today was just fantastic, a great place to meet friends and enjoy great food, excellent wine, and fantastic service, Malorey and Ronnie are iconic in Melbourne restaurant circles.
