'Bouquiniste' is French for 'bookseller', so armed with that trinket of linguistic intelligence it shouldn't be too hard to work out that Cafe Bouquiniste sells books. Similarly, 'cafe' might alert to you the fact that they also sell coffee and cake, but this little New Farm gem ain't quite as grand as its fancy name might suggest. On the shabbier side of shabby chic, in an old timber shopfront that's seen better days, Meredith Briggs' first venture into the world of coffee shop enterprise is so suited to the New Farm milieu that you'd wonder why no one thought of it before.
Her philosophy is simple: good coffee and food that everyone can afford. That means a decent slab of fresh, homemade cake for no more than $4, great coffee for $3, unembellished ham-and-egg breakfasts, savoury vegetarian tarts, sandwiches and toasties. All this is served in the most bohemian of settings that makes it not only cheaper than eating at home but a darn sight more stylish. Selfishness prevents me from recommending the raspberry-studded yoghurt cake, with its silky, vanilla-flecked, slightly tangy icing, but there are plenty of others you should try.
Set comfortably away from the Bermuda Triangle of traffic that the James Street cafe precinct has become, Cafe Bouquiniste is also as easy on the sanity as it is in on the budget.

my favorite little haunt
This quirky little cafe is so gorgeous, the food is a treat to eat and feels made with love and attention! It has a laid back atmosphere so I take all my clients there so they feel comfortable, relaxed and at ease. One of my favorite treats is their rose bud tea and the chai latte. the presentation adds to the whole experience!!

Cafe Bouquiniste
My daughter and I went to this little cafe to have a look at the books. We decided to have coffee and lunch while we where there. My little one had a cupcake which was lovely and fresh. She gulped that down. I had the mushroom and ricotta tart with salad. It was lovely and light and just the right amount. Coffee was good also. The only thing that niggled me was the choice of books. Not as many as expected and not very easy to get too and have a look. Overall a little crowded as in seating and stuff in the shop, for me. But worth a visit for some peace and a lovely lunch.

Cafe Bouquiniste
Having been to this little cafe bookshop many times I can say it's a great little place to chill out and sip a coffee. There are a couple of tables out front and inside, some soft cushions in the windows for sitting on that are perfectly matched to the laid back atmosphere. In fact I liked this place soo much I intend to steal the idea and try and open my own boutique cafe bookshop in Stockholm.
