Though the name is perhaps more likely to prompt dessert associations in this part of the world (is anyone else fantasising about chunky slices of moist black forest cake?), it's actually a not-so-subtle hint at the Bavarian feast to be found inside. They promise that their meats are lean and healthy, so diners needn't worry about walking into a stereotypical German lard-fest, but the meals are still as satisfyingly hearty as you'd expect. The region's many varieties of sausage feature heavily, while the rest of the menu spans from winter warmers such as Hungarian goulash (served with house-made noodles or Bavarian dumplings), to a comparatively light meal of seafood crepes.

Worst service ever
I was there last night with my fiance and 2 friends. We waiting so long for the menu, and when we got it we were just given 2 minutes to look at it before a waitress came. Me being a small eater decided to share a main with my fiance. The waitress said "are you sharing a seat with him? Everyone here eats alot why can't you? this is not right." She forced me to order an entree which i complied with, still stunned. Next I decided to share a beer with my fiance, I don't drink much alcohol. Again, she shook her head and said this is not right and asked me if i wanted a soft drink, and I don't like fizzy drinks and I just wanted water. She continued shaking her head and said it wasn't right. She rushed my other 2 friends through the menu. The food was good I must say. I wrote them an email, but from other reviews, I'm supposed to get a sarcastic reply. If you want to go and leave happy, just make sure you don't share or they will give you hell for it.

All I can say is the food was good
Was disappointed from the start - the staff were unorganised and look as if they were totally confused as to what was going on and one waitress was quite rude to our table of 20 the whole evening...
We prepaid our bill of $550 but had byo'd several bottles of wine which it turned out incurred $4 per person "corkage"... We found this quite disappointing as there was no mention of this per person "corkage" on their own website or menu...
An email complaint to the owner regarding staff service and "corkage" was receieved with sarcasm - very disappointed.
The only thing I can say is that the meals were large in size and tasty but the prices were quite hexy considering the quality was what you would expect at your basic local pub.
Sadly, all of our group indicated that they had no intention of returning.

Lecker!
My husband's parents are from Germany, so when we heard about this restaurant and the weather began to get quite cool, we headed over for some hearty winter fare.
The restaurant is set in a nicely appointed old Queenslander with the obligatory 'kitsch' German objects decorating the inside (deer heads, posters of Germany, Bavarian dolls, etc). Don't worry; it's done fairly tastefully.
We booked an early dinner on a Saturday night (6pm); by 7/7.30pm, the place was so packed there was hardly a spare seat in sight.
The dinners are HUGE. My in-laws, who usually value generous meals, decided next time they could share a main meal. We all had much food left on our plate.
I ordered a wurst (sausage) platter with sauerkraut and mashed potato as the main. My husband had the rabbit (very tasty!), my mother-in-law had the shnitzel (also quite good), and my father-in-law had the duck (half a duck with rotkhol (red cabbage) and dumplings). If I went again, I'd order the duck; the whole dish seemed to have a great array of complimentary flavours. You need to pre-order the duck (at least 4 hrs in advance), but from the taste I had, I'd say it was worth it. My husband said he'd definitely get the rabbit again.
My in-laws found the spices quite different to what they're used to. For example, the red cabbage had cinnamin in it and more of a clove flavour to what those from their region would do, which my in-laws put down to the restaurant being quite Bavarian in food and style.
Service was fine, the entertainment was fine (even better, was the whole restaurant joining in on the songs!). Unfortunately, when it came time for desserts, we weren't able to get crepes as much of the restaurant were still waiting on their mains and the chef just couldn't do desserts at that time.
I'd go again. But I'd consider sharing a main. And if I wanted dessert, I'd hope that the chef could handle it at the time I happen to have been dining.
Lastly, a word of advice to the wait staff, ensure your beers have large heads on them! Apparently, if in Germany and served a beer with next to no head on it, one would send it back! (The beer glasses often have guidelines to show how much head to expect; things like dish washing liquid can prevent beers from having the required head.)

Very European
Went for dinner with my husband. Tried some very nice wine, I give it 10/10, but can't remember the name of it, it's German wine. We had best pumkin soup ever for entree (10/10). For main I had a duck and it was very good (7/10) and my husband had Tiroler pork roast (8/10). Then we had a dessert: Heavens Delight 10/10 and Richard's little secret 10/10 It was outstanding! Definitely coming back.

Plenty of it - but average
The service was friendly, the atmosphere was inviting but the food was quite average. The meals were huge but the food was so heavy none of our party could finish them. The meat component in most of our meals was a little dry and slightly overcooked. Nonetheless, we enjoyed the experience.

A good night
A group of six of us dined here last night. The pea and ham soup was amazing and consumed by all in the group with gusto. The main meals were all large so do not come here if you don't have a hearty appetite.
The waiter was a delight and kept us entertained and well looked after.
All types of food are here from sausage to schnitzel, goulash to fish - something for everyone. A hint to the owners, the dumplings could be a little bigger and some vanilla pods in the red cabbage would lift the flavour from nice to wow status!!!
All of the group indicated they wished to attend again.
The man of German extraction in our group considered the food, while not as good as his mother's, was very nice and it was nice to see a place in Brisbane of this type.

Great Food, Fawlty Towers Service
The title says it all. The service could not have been much worse, which is a shame because the food was fantastic. Maybe you should see if they do take away?

The most delectable food and the best live music!
Anyone wanting a lovely night out should go to the Black Forest German Cafe Restaurant in Highgate Hill. This evening was accompanied by a violinist and a pianist who played with so much verve! Tangos, Classics, Intimates - I haven't heard such a wonderful sound. I believe they play every 2nd weekend from now on so be sure to visit when the music duo is there.
