Cafe Barcelona Highly Recommend
I went and ate here a few months ago, I have to say it would have to be right up there with some of the best food i've ever tasted! I bought a Voucher through Deals.com and totally worth it to, my partner and I left saying that was one of the most satisfying lunch's we have ever had, Service was great to. I'll be back.

Very much enjoyed this little restaurant
When I went with my partner we all thoroughly enjoyed it. Food was prompt, fresh and tasty, although some dishes were a bit salty for us, but the manager got the dishes remade just for us even though the restaurant was almost full.
Good atmosphere, and vibe, we left very happy, and will definately be back when we're next in Melbourne.

Pleasantly Surprised
I purchased a deals.com.au voucher for this restaurant and was slightly apprehensive after reading the reviews for it online.
However my fears were unfounded. The restaurant was quiet, the waitresses were friendly and attentive and the service was fast.
The food was good quality, well-prepared, fresh and extremely filling. My dining companion and I could not finish the 7-course tapas menu we ordered but we enjoyed each dish thoroughly.
Highly recommended as a nice restaurant for when you want to dine out without the frills of a fine-dining establishment.

Still waiting
We waited and waited and waited. We arrived at 8pm in a half empty restaurant and got our first food after 10pm. The waitress was nice, then sorry, then embarassed and then really embaressed but all to no avail. Would be interested to know how long the current owner and chef have been there. Four of us had drunk 2 bottles of wine before we got any food. I think once they have got behind with serving food and have upset patrons they make a decision to just neglect that table so they can keep up with the others. When the food arrived it was overcooked and certainly not worth the wait. It was certainly my worst restaurant experience for some years. Our experience was a while ago so hopefully they have improved.

How could you leave hungry?
To the person who posted before, how could you leave hungry? the 6 of us who came in only spent $30ish pp on food and we were stuffed!
But that aside we very much enjoyed everything we had, even the paella which was cooked very well and was bursting with seafood, like the menu says it was, which totally justifies the price.
The only let down was the wait on dessert, but we could understand a bit as the place for completely full.
Overall concensus was an overwhelming yes and we will all be back in the very near future. Good work to all the staff escecially the chefs.

Nice way to end a summer evening
First time at Barcelona but my partner had been before and loved it. We arrived pretty late, but it was still packed. We were seated straight away and ordered one of the banquets for two-- lovely! Great tapas. Our food arrived promptly (Barcelona brings out the dishes seemingly randomly) and we were very happy. Table next to us had been sitting there for well over two hours and were complaining about some calamari and meatballs not yet served to them. The meatballs arrived after the couple cancelled the remainder of their order, but the calamari never came. Not sure if the mistake was an anomaly as my dishes all arrived quickly and spaced just far enough apart that we weren't overcrowded with food.
Expect a very long, luxurious meal whiling away the evening with friends. Fantastic!

fantastic
I cant believe that someone could leave Barcelona hungry... I suppose that if you only ordered a salad at any restaurant you'd end up hungry though. I am always more than satisfied and often cant finish the meal. The food is delicious and its one of my favourite places. I have nothing to do with the restaurant/management yet feel offended at what you wrote, when the owners/chefs/staff obviously put a lot of effort into making it a great place.

Great Quality
Great food, the service was excellent and I have no complaints. The donuts with the dipping sauce was excellent. We had a good quantity of food as well. The reveiw that said he went home hungy should have ordered more food. I paid for the dinner for four of us and the price was very reasonable. I will come again and again - very satisfied customer.

Always Fantastic!!!
To that person that is still hungry, I'm not sure if you were dreaming, but I ate there last week, and make a point of dining in this restaurant every time I return to Melbourne from Perth, and the food is consistently fabulous, generous and very reasonably priced. We have dined at other Spanish tapas restaurants in Perth & Melbourne, and Barcelona runs rings around any other place I have tried. I think you should give Barcelona another try, otherwise I say you're missing out!!! Barcelona- keep up the great work, I have been dining in your restaurant since about 2004 and recommend you to everyone I know, so I hope you stick around for a very long time! We particularly enjoyed the Potatas Bravas, the meatballs, the tomato bread, calamari and the omlette.... well everything we ordered we loved, especially the Churros, yummm!! Wish we could kidnap you and relocate you to Perth! Thanks again for such fantastic food!

Reply
As the owner of Cafe Barcelona, I've tried so hard to not reply to "hungry as hell". But since he lied about what he actually had to eat that night, and then wrote about it here, I feel I have the need to keep our reputation.
There are three errors with his review.
1. The portion numbers he quoted were incorrect, we serve seven (7) wings per serve, and four (4) mushrooms per serve. So Mr "hungry as hell" if you intend to complain and ridicule us, at least tell the truth with the sizes.
2. The couple in question only had: olives, mushrooms, chicken wings and calamari between two persons. And when I personally took the order, I firmly said "that wouldn't be enough for two people". I was replied by "we'll see how we go". Doesn't that mean that if you were still as hungry as your said, you would order more dishes? Especially since you were of a muscular build.
3. Mr & Mrs "hungry as hell" had 1 beer, one glass of wine and an orange juice. The bill totalled around $60. Then they pulled out their entertainment card. That made sense to me, If you only spend $20pp on food here, you are bound to leave hungry, so off his $60 bill came a 25% discount.
So trying not to let this personal insult get the better of me, I would like anyone who has been in and had the calamari, to go to an a la carte restaurant and order a clalmari dish there, pay $20-30 for it and see if you get more calamari, or more padding on your plate, like salad or rice. Then come back and see that we are competitively priced.
But to all our regular, faithful and contented customers, I know you will agree with me on at least a few of the points I have made here.
I wish to see you all soon. Troy Chester Cafe Barcelona

I'm still hungry
First of all why didn't anybody tell me that Tapas meant "no food". The portions were the smallest in Melbourne and had a very hefty price tag for 6 little baby chicken wings, which they paid a dollar or less for, and the 3 tiny mushrooms which they brought out with grandeur.
My jaw dropped as my stomach ached for more food. The calamari was small and tasted as if it were frozen. I couldn't wait to pay my tab, and the waiter said that they had just redone the menu to provide more food. I was flabbergasted. He was serious.

Best winter venue in Melbourne
Arriving at 6:30 while the guitarist was still playing was a great start to the evening, just a shame they finished at 7... It was great to get out of the cold into the warmth. I can see why we had to book a week in advance, the place was full by 7. The menu was massive and everything we tried was flavoursome.
Standout dishes were the zarzuela, sizzling gambas, and the chorizo sausage... Also of course the Spanish donuts left us completely full.
Amazing night, will be making Barcelona my new regular, as the staff are very friendly and they know their menus well.

Could have been great!
We must say the place is charming cosy and very inviting. The food is amazing, a little pricey! The staff a little unorganised but very friendly. Our only down points were #1 We got sat next to a rubbish bin outside, we were happy to sit there as we wanted the table, but it smelt... well very much like a bin. #2 then the trip to the loo was an ordeal in itself, first past the chefs, then the maze to wash your hands in the basin which is half way back to the kitchen. Maybe we could have been told, it would have saved us all a lot of time and confusion. Please think of us who are not there everyday! Thank you for a lovely meal.

Great for grazing on tapas and having some nice wine whilst watching St Kilda walk by the front of the cafe. Not all the tapas were great, and it ranged from OK (chorizo) to fantastic (prawns, scallops) so personal taste is a big factor. Staff were very friendly and attentive.
