Cafe 21

Cafe 21's 2005 refurbishment transformed the space in this heritage building with new modern decor. The result isn't as offensive as you would expect, with all original features retained and enhanced by shades of black and grey with a splash of oriental red. There is not a hint of casino neon or flashing lights - very impressive for a 24-hour eatery in a casino. The menu is broad and eclectic, providing something for every mood, but executive chef Helmut Poxrucker adds something a bit special to even the most basic of meals, from fish and chips to lamb cutlets with couscous.

Very Average
Had a very average lunch at Cafe 21. I ordered the Seafood Basket which the menu stated it consisted of Scallops, Calamari, Prawns, Fish, Salad and Chips but there were no scallops or calamari. Instead of scallops, there were little round crumbed bites of mushed up fish in the guise of crumbed scallops which tasted revolting. The calamari was also very misleading as it was again mushed up fish in the shape of crumbed calamari rings. I guess the only real seafood on the plate were the crumbed prawn cutlets and the miserable piece of fish that seemed to be a bit past its use by date. I was very disappointed with the quality of the food presented to me considering the price I paid for it. I will not be returning to Cafe 21 - this substandard quality of food is totally unacceptable.

This is by far the worst place I've eaten in brisbane. The staff are rude and have no idea what they're doing, they were so slow. The waiter that served us had body odour and everytime he passed our table we had to stop breathing. The food is plain and boring not to mention overpriced with small servings. I'd rather eat at the mall, there are other places that open 24 hours. Don't bother with this place unless you're okay with wasteing your money.

Rushed in and out, cold and awful tasting food
After waiting in line for 30 minutes to get in I expected the food to be worth waiting for. They had a couple of awards for their food on the way in so I was pretty excited. Boy was I wrong.

Firstly we ordered the plate for two, despite the menu saying it came with a selection of seafood the only seafood was a little bit of salmon. At least the dips and bread were nice. However about halfway though they tried to bring out our mains, now we are not slow eaters they just wanted to rush us in and out.

So with our mains already on our table we quickly finished the starter and started on the mains. I had the tortellini while my wife had the fish chips and vegetables with three butter source. My pasta was cold and dry.

My wife faired no better, the combo of boiled vegetables and fish and chips was just silly and did not go together at all. The fish was sloppy and awful as well. My wife had also ordered the large plate of the dish, the only thing large about it was the actual plate itself, the person sitting next to us had the same dish but in the small serving and had exactly the same amount of food just on a smaller plate.

looks good... but....
Atmosphere gets top points and the service was great, the presentation and quantities of the food was excellent BUT

(We had the rump steak and the flame-grilled beef burger) the steak was a MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT!
