Alexander's Grill

If you get your thrills from open grills, Alexander's Grill is all about raising the stakes (or steaks?) in quality meat. Tinged with a Mediterranean zest, the menu casts its net wide, with steak, pork, lamb, sausage and other grilled mains available. The banquet menu grants an opportunity to get stuck into a selection of the restaurant's specialties, although home-style dishes like the Chevapchichi (skinless Slavic sausage) or the classic porterhouse and T-bone steaks should satisfy their devotees. A large wall of boutique wines alluringly invites diners to choose a strong red or light white to complement their meal.

Disappointing
We love a good steak and when this restaurant appeared in the Good Food Guide 2011, we decided to give this place a try.
We booked ahead and turned up on time, only to find that the table was not ready. We indicated then that we would prefer a table in the front section (there were several empty unmarked tables), only to be given one in the rear section where the wine refrigerator(?) noise subtly annoyed us all night. We asked to move and our request got lost on the maitre'd. The white noise problem was later drowned out by the noisy atmosphere as more people came in for dinner.
The steaks were tasty enough but again, very disappointed that one of the wagyu steaks came to the table overcooked and cold (this is a STEAK place!). We sent it back and received a replacement promptly, only to be charged twice on the bill! Again, it took several minutes of waiting around before the bill issue was fixed.
The service was poor for an establishment such as this. Wait staff took too long to respond to order requests, sides took too long to turn up, main meals did not turn up simultaneously.....
The one good thing was the wine list - extensive and interesting. However, it seemed like the wait staff did not have adequate knowledge of the wines and were unable to provide assistance or opinions.
For the poor service, we received no acknowledgment for the trouble. But then again, the wait staff seemed rather clueless, so of course, they could not have understood that they had provided poor service.
For a meal which cost almost $500, in what seemed like a beautiful setting, I am thoroughly disappointed by the service and to some extent, the food.
Unfortunately we will not be returning.

Very Disapointing
Having dined at the Docklands Butcher Grill Restaurant, we have been raving about it to everyone who will listen - I even have them as a fan on my facebook page! This weekend we decided to visit the Bourke Street Restaurant and were totally disappointed. The food was still good, but felt the portions and quality were not as good as Docklands and the service was terrible.

We ordered mains with additional sides, one of the mains was prawns I also asked for an additional glass of wine when the entr?e was removed. A short time after the meals were delivered I called the waitress over to our table and reminded her that we had ordered sides and I another glass of wine, I also requested a finger bowl.

When our meals were almost complete the waitress returned with the finger bowl I advised we no longer wanted the sides. She looked at me with surprise and I indicated to the table that we had all but finished our meals and no longer required them.

On clearing our table we advised we would like bill and she returned with coffee and desert menus, again requesting the bill then the glass of wine turned up!

It was disappointing as we had taken a friend who was visiting from overseas and having experience great service and quality previously at their Docklands Restaurant we were very disappointed. The service person who we paid the bill to suggested we let him know what happened next time we book and he will do something for us there will not be a next time.

A great experience
A great experience. The food was fantastic, the service was fantastic, and the atmosphere was exactly what you would expect. We ordered steak and seafood platter. The steak melted in the mouth. Seafood was great and prepared to perfection. Very impressed with the service from the staff. They looked after us well. Will definitely visit again.
