In the days when WA was struck with gold fever, the Broken Hill Hotel opened its doors to a thirsty crowd and quickly established itself as a Perth icon, standing majestically for over a century on the Albany Highway. With a fresh lick of paint and a beer garden together with a sleek modern look, it stands prouder than ever. However, it's not just for business lunches or hip young crowds. As the strapline boldly states, this is 'a place for everyone', and on Fridays and Saturdays the restaurant and its inviting sunny balcony positively buzzes with the chatter of a broad mix of people. Broken Hill's innovative menu is the work of ex-Balthazzar chef Clint Hawkes. The German sausages with creamy mash, wilted spinach and onion jam is a definite must try, and the scrummy mushroom risotto with porcini and truffle oil just as popular as the good old-fashioned fish of the day.

A very average meal for what (unfortunately) has become
Perth is expensive to eat out, we know this. It's now not unusual to see mains averaging in at the $30-mark. And the Broken Hill Hotel is no exception. Although there are "light meals" for around $18, the mains are all pricey indeed ($28-$34). And it is standard pub fare - burgers and pizzas as light meals, and steak/fish/roasts as mains.
I ate at this restaurant with a group of 10 celebrating a friend's birthday tonight. The first impression was good and service was prompt and friendly. Water magically appeared when we needed it, and when the mains arrived, they went to the right people without wait staff asking "who ordered what?"
But... it took well over an hour for our meals to arrive (7pm booking, we ate at 8:30) despite there being only our group and another group of three in the restaurant. The food was, on the whole, very average, and not worth anywhere near that $30 mark. I had the lamb burger ($17.50) which consisted of a small dried-out lamb patty on turkish bread with a bit of tomato, lettuce and a yoghurt dressing. The chips were nothing special. Not a good burger, not a good meal. Other meals were of similar standard - overcooked and missing the little extras. But after waiting so long for food, we'd eat anything and not complain!
All in all, the restaurant has a pleasant atmosphere and the bar does as well. Service was good, it's just the food that lets it down. And the prices.

Excellent Satruday night out
Wow. We decided to dine here after friends had driven past and noticed the beer garden. We were really impressed by both the food and service we received.
We started with the trio of dips with Turkish bread. The dips for the night were pimento, onion and cheese and a delicious mint yoghurt.
The Broken Hill has just introduced a new menu, with so many great choices we had trouble deciding what to have. I would definitely recommend having a look on their website at the menu. In the end we decided on the seared salmon, the lemon herb chicken breast, szechuan-dusted calmari and lamb. All were delicious and well presented.
We finished up with a honeycomb, chocolate and nut praline-type dessert, and then moved to the bar for more drinks! A wonderful night all around.
