Bretts Wharf Seafood Restaurant

Brett's Wharf is famous throughout Brisbane for two things. The first is the seafood, which is always made from the freshest possible catch. Brett's Wharf's second claim to fame is that it occupies a particularly scenic bend in the Brisbane River, and the view is spectacular.

Great food
First time here, booked via the internet for a table near the water. Great view, food was great, service was great. Just a pity that the waiter rushed us out as soon as we had finished our meals, even though we were still drinking the wine. Regardless of that, would like to come back again.

A lovely evening!
After reading these reviews, I must admit that I was a little hesitant about returning to Brett's Wharf. We had been there about 12 months ago and had found it quite wonderful indeed. This time, it kept up with our initial expectation. Brett's Wharf is as fine as always.

We arrived on time and were seated promptly. After browsing the wine list, we were asked for drinks which were then served fairly soon after ordering. Service stayed at a great consistent level all night. We were often asked if we were enjoying our meals and our glasses were never empty.

For entree, we enjoyed some tapas. We ordered three dishes; parmesan crusted olives, the spring rolls and the lamb. All three were incredibly moreish. I would never have thought of serving olives that way, but boy they were good. I would really recommend the tapas if you are keen for a mix of flavours without breaking your budget. We also had the sourdough bread and dukkah for nibbles. Quite nice indeed.

For mains, I dined on the Atlantic salmon, and my husband enjoyed the Moreton Bay bugs. Both were fabulous and my husband was definitely impressed with the bugs. Both delicious!

The atmosphere was lovely and we arrived just as the sun was going down. We had a great seat with a view of the city and watched the Citycats go by as the sun set.

All in all a lovely evening. Great consistent service and enjoyable and filling meals.

Don't bother!
My husband and I had been excited about going to dinner at Bretts Wharf for a long time however our dinner last night was so disappointing I will never return and tell everyone I know not to bother.
The restaurant was definitely not what I expected when I walked in - when you're paying over $20 for entrees I thought it would be five-star furnishings all the way but the plain cement floor and dreary atmosphere wasn't very impressive and I was tempted to walk down to the local fish and chip shop.
Ordering was hard - nothing really interested me much so I got the scallops (how could I go wrong) and my husband got the pork belly! How wrong were we? Very!!!! The scallops were disgusting. Everything on them ruined the flavour and I had to scrape it all off to only eat the scallop.
My husband's twice-cooked pork belly tasted very ordinary!!! Didn't even want to swap with him and the tabouleh with walnut was the worst combination of flavours that I think I ever tasted! Parsley and walnut - not something I would ever put on a menu.
The service during this time was ridiculous - we had to yell at a waitress across the room to get us a second drink after 15 mins of every waitress/waiter in the room ignoring us!
The mains were better but definitely not worth the price. A plate of seafood is hard to get wrong but I could have cooked it better at home on the BBQ and not paid over $100 for it!
During our dinner wait, someone in the kitchen continued to yell at people in the kitchen, which really added to our overall experience that this restaurant is a total disappointment and we will never return. As I said, don't bother - you'll just be annoyed at yourself for wasting money on a totally horrible dining experience!

Not a good lunch
We dine out regularly at restaurants, and on this occasion chose Bretts Wharf, although busy, the pre-lunch drinks took a while to arrive, the breads took an absolute age to be served. I chose the seafood plate, which was edible but basically a plate of squid, which was like rubber, and we waited 40 minutes for it, however it was misleading as the menu stated crab when you only get a spicy crab cake. The other dish we ordered was the grilled moreton bay bugs, which came out burnt and the meat was tainted and tasted of burnt charcoal, which came out as I was nearly finished my meal. When we informed the waiter he came to clear the table and saw the bugs were uneaten - his reply was "that would be the grill", and he cleared the table.

All in all we had a very ordinary lunch, paid our bill in full and left considering whether we would revisit this restaurant again.

A really bad experience
I took my parents to celebrate their 37th wedding anniversary. Many websites state that it is one of the best restaurants in Brisbane! Unfortunately, we did not think so. As soon as we arrived we were directed to a table. After this point, it took us circa 20 minutes to have the waitress come back for us to order drinks. We ordered the drinks and tapas ... these took another 30 minutes ... and dinner... took over 40 minutes to arrive. Amazing! Quality was another issue. I ordered paella - it had absolutely no spices and was tasteless. At that point of the night, all we wanted was to leave the place!!! Really, it's a place I would never recommend - horrible cost/benefit!

Bretts Wharf - One of my Top 5 Dining Experiences
Quite simply, this was one of the best dining experiences that I have ever had. Yes, I have been to Lurleens, Restaurant 2 and some of the other recognised places of top end dining. But this was something else.

Our work group was celebrating a particularly wonderful November - Bretts Wharf the destination we decided on. Sure, it did take a while for the food to come out, but the company was good and it was sure worth the wait.

We started off with the tapas - I had read a review about the crumbed olives. It wasn't that they melted in my mouth. They filled my mouth with a combination of tangy flavour and perfect texture. The sauce complemented them perfectly. Even better was the Tiger Prawn and spicy sausage kataifi. This was the most tasty prawn I have ever had anything to do with. On a skewer, again with a creamy sauce of relevance - this morsel touched taste buds that I never knew I had.

But the Morton Bay bugs were the 'piece de resistance'. These did melt in your mouth - the perfect-sized main, garnished with prawns and salt and pepper calamari. The creamy white butter sauce was the perfect compliment to the juicy, tender snippets of one of Queensland's special treasures. As I slowly and very deliberately enjoyed each tender bite - I was in the back of my mind planning my next visit.

We are booked to go back again this weekend!

Christmas Dinner/Brett's brand lunch
Our table was one of the larger and we had all paid $130 per head. We were seated in a back, hot room near a beautiful grey wallpapered wall. I had a view of the grey wall for 3 hours. The initial small appertiser was tasteless.

The entree was delicious oyster, prawns and an interesting salmon dish. The crab dish lacked the white meat and the container was more lettuce and cherry tomatoe than crab. It was referred to as a crab dish.
The main was a few pieces of pumpkin, irregularly shaped, and a small piece of parsnip. There were the scraggy end pieces of ham thrown on top and jus. Did not look appertising at all. The entree was even larger than this portion.

The bread rolls were tasty - but there was NO butter knife. The room was so hot that the butter pats melted all over the bread and butter plate they were served upon. There were also no fish knives and forks.

The Christmas pudding tasted like it had been made with cheap ingedients. The ice cream was half melted.

My coffee came with milk already in the cup.
All the staff seemed surly. Not a Christmas cheer in the place.

That was my first and last visit to Brett's Wharf.

I had invited visitors from overseas and expected a much higher standard.

Suggestions: Butter is served on a butter dish, with a butter knife placed next to it. If it is a hot day put it in a bowl of ice.

There are various, different types of cutlery. The basic fish knife and fork is one such type. There others such as soup spoons and fruit knifes.

Have waiters lap patrons when they sit down.

Teach staff to be happy and smile, even if things are falling apart in the kitchen. The clientele do not want to know about the kitchen and staffing problems.

Fantastic food!
Beautifully set-out restaurant, making the most of the views from its position. Very elegant decor, furniture etc. The kind of restaurant where you can have an extremely romantic and private meal with your partner in slightly dimmed light. Delicious food, presentation and quality and taste - impeccable. Pricey, but well worth it. Perfect for a special occasion.

This restaurant has served consistantly good food for the past five years. The menu is an interesting mix of modern Australian cuisine, the surroundings are inviting and the service is attentive without being cloying. Alistair McLeod is always willing to discuss how a particular dish is constructed and in my case even passed on the recipe!
