The second coming of the artisan bread heroes at Dench Bakers, this bookstore cafe features all the same great food along with a few new tricks we haven't seen before.
Named after a childen's book about a hungry badger who wants to eat nothing but bread and jam (both are in ample supply on the menu), it's unsurprising to find this cafe sits comfortably at the back of a bookstore. Combine this with the sensational bread from Dench Bakers and the culinary skills of Stefanie Weishaupt (formerly of Teage Ezard's Gingerboy) and you've got a recipe for one of the best new cafes Hawthorn has seen in a long time.
Unlike the Fitzroy North original, the menu at Frances gets a little more experimental. You're just as likely to see an ox-tongue ragout or the ever-popular white anchovies with a boiled egg and aioli as you are to see more standard cafe fare.
