Brave Cafe Restaurant

This buzzing and friendly cafe in the strictly local end of Gould Street is always packed with regulars from the surrounding blocks, who overflow and spill onto the pavement tables on Bondi's sun-drenched summer days. The cafe's interior is relaxed and colourful, matching the atmosphere and crowd, and the food is a thoughtful and well put together mix of organic produce, with plenty of gluten-free and vegetarian options. Breakfast here is an excellent, well-priced way to start a lazy weekend day - they really know how to poach a free-range, organic egg and the pancakes are done to perfection, as is the organic coffee.

Wonder-Lunch at Brave Organic Caf?
I first discovered Brave through contacting the Coeliac Society. Brave was listed as a Gluten-free friendly restaurant, and as I live in the Eastern Suburbs, I decided to give it a go..
I invited 3 friends along for Lunch on a Saturday. When I put the invites out I discovered that one of my friends, Anna, had already eaten there and grabs her coffee there on a regular basis. She said she would love to join me, there, as she loves the food and coffee, so the date was set.

On arrival we noticed that it was quite full and I thought I should have booked {discovered that bookings can't be made on weekends between 10 and 1 because it's too busy and bookings often don't show :( } to get a table. Thankfully a waiter spotted us straight away out the front. He let us know that there were some outdoor seats available now and that we could move inside as soon as a table became available. He seemed very busy, but was very friendly and professional in dealing with our needs at the same time.

After initially sitting outside we were quickly relocated. Lunch started in earnest with a chilled bottle of Australian pinot gris (I'm not sure if I am allowed to mention the brand here?). It was quite superb, not too wooded. A mixed cheese plate was on the table within 10 minutes, comprising of Goat's cheese with ash rind, a blue cheese and some fantastic Australian Cheddar. They were even prepared to toast some Gluten-free bread to go with the cheese (for $1). :)

The lunch menu was quite simple with burgers (GF), salads, pasta (no GF there), soups and they also offered all-day breakfasts. As we ordered another bottle, I opted for the King Prawn and Sesame salad with avocado. It was simply fresh and divine. My friends had an organic chicken salad, a tofu burger with the most amazing hand made chips and aioli, and a homemade gnocchi with porcini mushrooms, which she said was beautiful. Unfortunately, I couldn't try the gnocchi as I am a Coeliac.

The lunch was delightful and at the end of the second bottle we were a tad tipsy, so we decided to finish with a coffee instead of more wine ;p. The coffee was incredible. They use an organic fair trade coffee, and for a long black drinker, there was no bitterness at all!

In relation to the ambience, it was buzzing. Customers around us were chatting away happily {although a lot of them were still on breakfast.. lol}, the food came out quickly and the staff were very accommodating. One of my other friends in attendance, Andrew, is vegetarian and stays away from gluten too, so it was just great for us to all have a place where many different dietary needs are not only accommodated, but passionately represented!

It was refreshing to find such an understated looking cafe with such a sophisticated philosophy about the needs contemporary diners. It was on the higher end of quality for cafe food that I've ever eaten, but with mains no more than $15.90 and a wine of that quality at under $40, it was very good value for what you get. Organic chicken and eggs, a lot of vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options and sensational coffee. Bravo, Brave!

I will be back more often.

When the meals arrived, the food demands silence.Brunch at Brave - 9 out of 10
I went to Brave Cafe for brunch yesterday and was seriously impressed by the food, coffee and service.
Hats off to the kitchen and wait staff who always deliver quickly, no matter how busy it is. i don't think I have ever waited longer than about 20 minutes from when I walk through the door to when a plate is served, almost always after the coffee has arrived. They give fast and friendly service and they seemed to know a lot of the diners by name which indicated that its primarily a locals' joint.
Brave's trademark is freshness: both its produce and its recipes. Yesterday I ordered roasted tomatoes (these were sweet and cooked to perfection) and a potato rosti or hash brown (this was delicately herbed and deliciously crispy) to complement scrambled eggs that were perfectly softly cooked. Combined with yummy coffee at the temperature that can be slurped but not skulled, this meal was the perfect antidote to Friday night's excesses.
Seriously, who wants to cook when there is Brave Cafe?
