Boucla

Paying homage to her ancestral home on the Greek island of Kastelorizo, Despina has created an inviting Aladdin's cave of fabulous flavours, aromas, trinkets and jewels. Your eyes are drawn in every direction of this tiny cafe-cum-gift shop by the exquisite tapestries, silverware, mosaics, gourmet goodies, intriguing family photos and Despina's seductive counter display of housemade cakes. Not to mention a blackboard menu flaunting fresh spanakopitas (spinach and feta filo pies), babotsaki (eggplant stuffed with lamb and cheese), the ever-changing mezzo plate and beautiful baklava made by Despina's aunt. Tea varieties include Moroccan, Thai, Indian and Persian rose as well as herbal infusions, while coffee drinkers can choose from Italian blends, spicy varieties and a range of French syrups. And few can resist Despina's famous hot chocolate. Rich, creamy and made with real milk chocolate.

Boucla Magic
I have been coming to Boucla for years now for my morning coffee, but when it opened for dinner for the first time last year on a Thursday night we were blown away. Nestled at the Southern (more quiet) end of Rokeby lies one of the best Cafes in Subiaco possibly better than the King Street equivalents (which are also all exceptional)....nay you say? Well read on and let me explain myself.
A Cafe during the week (exc Sunday), the coffee is sublime created by the Barista, consistently magnificent every day (yep drink too much) is all that one can hope for. Not having to explain what a long mac is at cafes (upon then receiving the equiv of a latte) is one of the small appreciations in life (mind you, you can ask for how you like it and they won't get offended). The Baristas that make the coffee on different days are all professional and know how to make exceptional Fiori coffee (yep definitely drink too much coffee). The cakes, slices etc are homemade out the back and magnificent.
On a Thursday Night this end of Rokeby comes alive, the homemade tapas style Greek/Mediterranean delights and soups are terrifically simple , tasty and hearty. The service is friendly and genuine, the atmosphere is pulsing and heaving with life and scents make the mouth water. BYO wine no corkage is almost criminal but gleefully taken advantage of. You can't make bookings so get in around from 7 and you'll get fed, any later and they literally can run out of food as the place is always packed to the gills!
Boucla is extremely busy every day it opens, don't be dismayed...this is for a reason, because it is the best.

So glad Subiaco still has a cafe like this.
This cafe has lots of character, I wish there were more cafes like it in Subiaco.
It has a personal touch and sense pride.
There are little seats and cushions to sit on in every corner, including a hidden corridor out the back and there a lots of interesting artworks to look at.
The staff are very friendly. Behind the counter is a sort of photographic history of Rokeby rd showing the time it had trams etc.
The food is mostly homemade cuisine and the coffee is very good.
I had the chicken pie followed by the gluten free chocolate cake both.
I wish it was open on Sunday so I could get breakfast:)
