Cambodian food has a lot in common with the better-known cuisines from its neighbours: China, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. Under the pink pendant lights at Bopha Devi, there's a great range of the dishes available to share at communal tables: from congee (also popular in China) to a Cambodian version of the light, herbed fish broths we're more familiar with in Vietnamese cuisine. Save room for such desserts as chargrilled coconut bananas.

Gluten-free compatible
As a gluten-free diner my options can be rather limited but Bopha Devi provides not only plenty of choices but marks them as GF on the menu. A simple gesture but most appreciated - you know up-front what you can have. I have eaten here once a week for the past three and everything has been good, fresh and appealing. I think the green curry chicken bites and green onion rice cakes are my favourite. The main serves are large so I recommend an entree. Price wise getting on the expensive side but this is Yarraville and the ingredients are quality. Eating in is nice but get in early because there aren't any tables. Take away is possible too but their ten minute wait for food turned into 30.

Great introduction to Cambodian cuisine
Bopha Devi is a tiny space with a few long tables to share with other diners and a couple of small intimate tables. The space is quite tastefully decorated for an Asian restaurant (no flashing lights!) The food was generally very good. We ordered banana blossom and chicken salad, salaw ma-choo (sour soup), khnei beef (ginger beef), prawn kari (curry), amok (curried fish steamed in banana leaves). The first three dishes were very good with a great balance of spices and flavours. Cambodian cooking is not spicy like Thai; fresh chilli is instead added at the time of serving according to individual preference. The two dishes that should have been fiery were not. I was disappointed by the amok - this has to be one of the signature Cambodian dishes and was far too bland and watery. The kari (curry) was also bland, and very thick when it should be a soupy consistency. I think these dishes have been modified (Aussie-fied) and are at any rate not a patch on my mother's cooking. All in all I think these guys are doing a great job in bringing Cambodian cuisine to the Australian palate - be adventurous and try something other than the spring rolls, the more unpronouncable the better! Do yourself a favour and take this meal the Cambodian way - with a bowl of rice per person, and sharing from plates at the centre of the table.

Go for the entrees
Bopha Devi continues to do consistently good food in a gorgeous tiny hole in the wall in Yarraville. All the dishes tend to be a little shy with the traditional spices so don't expect a chilli hit or aromatic hits of lemongrass, lime, coriander or ginger used so strongly in traditional Cambodian cooking. That said, we keep going back time and time again because even though the mains are bordering on bland, the entrees are sensational. The fish cakes are great but their masterpiece is the stuffed chicken wings. Divine!
