Japanese sensation
Bonsai is just sensational, and as a Bronte local (near enough), I think it is just great that we have a restaurant of this quality on our doorstep. I too am a bit of an aficionado, travelling far and wide to eat Japanese at least once a week. No longer - for my complete satisfaction, I need only to stroll down the hill to Bonsai. Tempura that simply sings, sushi & sashimi as good as I've ever eaten it, and some clearly Japanese twists on more western flavours and ingredients. They might not read as Japanese dishes (I've seen burgers and risotto on the specials), but one taste and it's like I've been transported back to Tokyo or Kobe. Modern, delectable, interesting food, served in a great location.

Change of Heart?
Bonsai started out as a Japanese Restaurant with a French influence. And very good it was too. Unfortunately the scales seem to have shifted over the past couple of months to become a French Restaurant with Japanese influence, which makes it a slightly eclectic version of the Swell restaurant next door. The food is still very good but as a Japanese food aficionado I'm a bit sad to see the shift...
