What was La Trattoria became Bondi Trattoria and then Bondi Tratt after locals kept shortening the name. Now, after a refurb, the 'oria' is back, and with it a new chef and an upmarket vibe. Yet regulars shouldn't fret - this fave local remains laidback and family friendly, and the extra dough rewards with polished service and Andy Davies' (ex-Regis Room) terrific mod-Italian menu. Rustic mains include Ligurian fish stew and braised white rabbit with pancetta, the solid pasta list includes gnocchi in burnt butter sauce, and there are gourmet pizzas to boot.
The stylish wooden and white interior was designed by the owners, and it fits ideally with the breezy space, offering beach views from the hilly South Bondi possie. When the sun's shining, the doors are flung open and alfresco tables allow sun worshippers their melatonin fix. Wines come by the litre or half-litre and are solely from Pizzini, the King Valley's Italian varietal specialist. There are also five Italia 'birra' on offer, from Peroni Gran Riserva to Sardinia's Ichnusa, and even the cocktail list sticks to Italian ingredients. Test drive the 'vespa': a combo of vodka, Punt e Mes, sweet vermouth and OJ. Bella, just bella.

well done boys
I've been frequenting the Tratt since the early '90s and have never been disappointed. Since the revamp the boys have lifted it a notch and the lunch we had the other day certainly delivered with the wow factor. The food is sensational and the service didn't miss a beat under the watchful eye of one of the owners. The location has always been one of the best in Bondi but now the room has been redecorated we felt like spending the whole afternoon there. The fettucine marinara was the best I've eaten, anywhere. Well done boys, all this and you've managed to maintain a reasonable price point.
