Bombay by Night

Caulfield South's Bombay by Night has made a determined effort to not be the usual Indian restaurant, ditching the travel agent posters and sitar music in favour of elements typically associated with fine dining, such as crisp linen and understated lighting.

Lovers of the cuisine will be happy to hear that what comes out of the kitchen, however, is Indian through and through. The menu is comprised of traditional dishes, with a leaning toward the flavours of the Punjabi region of northern India. You'll find plenty of familiar dishes to choose from, such as the chicken tikka, fresh from the tandoor oven, or the spicy Goan beef vindaloo. Step off the beaten path and discover house specialties like the desi dahi ghosht (lamb cooked in yoghurt with whole spices) or the chicken multani (tandoor-cooked chicken in a chickpea curry with pomegranate seeds).

$25 minimum spend - WTF???
I had dinner with 4 girlfriends here last night. One of the others booked a few hours before dinner. 4 of us ordered as one of our friends was late. They took our order and 5 mins later the last of our group arrived. She had eaten earlier and decided just to order tea. She was told in no uncertain terms that there was a minimum $25 spend per diner. This was never mentioned when the booking was made, nor was it pointed out when we ordered our dishes (which were less than $25). We were gobsmacked. We asked if she could just have tea as 4 of us were dining in. They quite rudely refused and said it was a rule and she had to spend $25 if she wanted to sit with us. how disgusting! We would have walked out then and there but we knew our meals were already being cooked. She ordered some takeaway just to have spent her $25 on something. The food was delicious but the service gets a zero from me because they were so rude and inflexible. Plus they delivered the wrong dishes to all the wrong people. I will never return and will tell as many people as I can about this - no wonder they were more or less empty on a sunday night.

Great local all-rounder.
Fantastic service is the cornerstone for any good restaurant and Bombay by Night has this in spades. The food is flavoursome and expertly delivered, with a couple of original dishes you can only get here (Khata Ala Ghosht & Desi Dahi Gosht). They get the simple things right (Garlic Naan etc) and also deliver on special dishes and complex regulars (Chicken Tikka Masala, Dal). The real quality for me lies in the knowledge of the owner who was happy to discuss in detail the methods behind his passionate food. Plus the BYO option and moderate prices were a welcomed surprise. Highly recommended.

AVG dining experience
Nice dining environment, not quite justified by the food though. It's Indian enough, but still far from authentic.

Fantastic food at very reasonable prices
We enjoyed a lovely dinner here on a Saturday night. The staff were attentive and friendly and happy to offer menu suggestions. The lighting is warm and flattering creating a relaxed and inviting atmosphere.
The restaurant is bigger than it looks from the outside so if you don't have a booking don't assume it is full. We shared a couple of curries both of which had the 'temperature' that we told the waiter we liked. When we asked for extra roti it arrived quickly. The prices were extremely reasonable and given that the resuarant allows BYO it made for a lovely evening out withut breaking the bank. We will definitely be going back!
