Sydney's former North Head quarantine station has been reborn as a destination for tourists and foodies alike. Sitting high on the headland of the Manly peninsula, Q Station makes the most of its spectacular setting at Sydney Harbour National Park. The site's Boilerhouse Restaurant marries history and heritage architecture with a chic fit out and world-class views.
Head there for lunch and sample from a tapas-inspired menu, which might include nibbles such as jamon serrano with artichoke; or chickpea and sweet corn fritters; along with more substantial meals such as sirloin steak with onion, potatoes and blue cheese. At night visitors can enjoy a drink surrounded by the industrial decor of the Engine House bar before heading up to the mezzanine level for dishes such as slow-cooked lamb shoulder and pan-fried ocean trout fillet with speck and lentils.
Throw in such desserts as chocolate and pear pudding or a plate of old- and new-world cheeses and there's good reason to make a trip across the harbour. If arranging transport home sounds too difficult, stay the night and indulge in a seaside breakfast followed by a trip to Q Station's day spa.

Fascinating location
This is one of the most interesting new restaurants in Sydney. The views are incredible. The location is a restored boilerhouse at the old Quarantine Station at North Head, near Manly. The restaurant is very close to the harbour, though you have to sit outside to enjoy the scenery. Why not a few windows, I ask? Something to do with State Government bureaucrats, I was told.
Anyway, the food was fine and the service friendly. Will be really great in summer. You can catch a ferry to the place or sail in yourself if you've got a dingy. Otherwise you have to park your car at the entrance up the top of the national park and catch a free bus, which is ok if you're not in a hurry, but why can't they let you walk or bike down? Bureaucrats again? This place could be even better but it's really good now. There's a pretty good museum near the restaurant and a theatre also, which looks interesting.
