Relaxed and very cool, Blue Chillies serves up Malaysian cuisine with an accompaniment of blues, jazz and soul. Sharing dishes banquet-style is the best way to eat at Blue Chillies, because you will want to sample them all. Start with a bowl of sambal ikan bilis (tiny dried anchovies in sambal sauce) or parkers gem (deep-fried balls of potato and chicken with chilli sauce) but do try to sample a laksa here at least once - it's legendary.

Was a little dissapointed this time round...
The last time i went to Blue Chillies I thought it was fantastic, but this time I was quite dissapointed by our food. The curry puffs were simply deep fried puff balls and the vegetable rolls were simply spring rolls. The calamari was delicious. The whitebait extremely spicy and hard to eat as it was shredded in to a million little pieces. For mains we shared one of the stirfried noodles and Prawns. The noodles were stock standard although lacking a bit of flavour. The Prawns were delicious and presented beautifully...and for $27 for 4 they should be. The staff were friendly and nice but it was annoying they couldnt just leave a jug of water at our table...we had to keep trying to get their eye contact to refill our small glasses. The seating also is a bit squashed and when half way through our meals a couple was seated right next to us, we felt we had to restrict our conversation as we could hear every word of theirs. Besides for the seating its a nice atmosphere and decorated well. But you pay for it as the menu is a lot more expensive than other similar cuisines on and around Brunswick Street.

Lovely night out spent at Blue Chillies with friends for a birthday party. We were seated upstairs, which is nice if you are a big group, and we had the place pretty much to ourselves the whole night. Wine list could be a bit more varied, in both types of wine and in price. The food was great, especially the vegetarian options (there were 3 vegetarians dining with us). We chose to share our mains banquet style - it seemed the waiter was slightly taken aback by this approach and tried to convince us that we had not bought enough food, entrees, etc. We went ahead with our initial order and everything was fine. Something that stood out is there was nothing extra special about Blue Chillies to make us want to come back, which is a pity as it was nice food and atmosphere. This is probably where the service could pick up a notch or two.
