Blancmange

The former site of Manna has had mini-makeover, emerging with new owners and the more posh moniker of Blancmange. Situated a bit off the main drag, with verdant views of Petersham Park, the tranquil location is worthy of a real estate agent's vocabulary of adjectives. The building itself adds to the picturesque image, fronted with blue heritage tiles. Inside, Manna's old echoing tile floor has been softened by dark brown woven carpet. Quirky artworks line the walls, adding a distinctive character to the otherwise traditional bistro space.

The menu lists a frequently changing array of modern European dishes, with specials offered daily. Flavours might range from classic French to English, but the DIY sensibility behind the dishes remains the same. Traditional Gallic techniques are employed behind the scenes as the kitchen crafts everything from scratch, from stocks to bread. To match this cross-section of old world tastes, the wine list features as many northern hemisphere vinos as local drops.

Birthday dinner
I attended a birthday party on the 17th April 2010 with 2 special friends and we all came to the conclusion that Blancmange ticked all our boxes. Service - great, Atmosphere - great, Food - 10/10, Value for money - ok. Highly recommend it. And by the way it was my birthday. he he.

Thanks, but no thanks....
Attentive service upon entry only to wait for an hour between courses. After being there for 90 + mins I was overjoyed to receive my main - an under cooked chicken breast.

Wont be returning and couldn't wait to leave......

Soooooooo great!
Some family and I came for dinner last night on the recommendation of a friend. The service was lovely and attentive; the waiters let their personality shine through and they were even included in snippets of our conversations throughout the night. We're a bit of a rowdy lot and all of us are either currently or formally in hospitality (some from 5star places in europe) so going out for dinner means we all know what to look for and what to appreciate - these guys were fantastic.

The menu is printed daily and the wine list is extensive and exciting. It was especially exciting to see about 7 different dessert wines (and not a whiff Noble One, thank the lord).

I had a special souffle, roo with snails and passionfruit delicious and they were all wonderfully constructed dishes. We shared alot, too; the scallops with proscuitto and broad beans were sensational.

The interior was super-cute and a bit eclectic, from the blue-and-white striped awning over the window to the abstact art to the nanna cupboard complete with floral china cups and saucers to the plush wallpapered bathrooms.

A definite favourite, I've already started recommending it to everyone.

Great family night out
We celebrated a 24th birthday here and had a ball! The service was wonderful and everyone was very accommodating about last minute changes to our numbers. We included two strict vegetarians who felt well catered for. The jazz soundtracks and trendy artworks all helped to make the night fun. The food was well-priced and tasty. We will definitely be back.

Pretty Pedestrian
For all the hype, I found everything rather average. A lot can be done with a small space to make it seem cosy and inviting, not the case with Blancmange. The service was hardly attentive - we had to pour the wine ourselves and items on the menu were not described adequately. The food itself was very average fare - given that it was Bastille Day and Blancmange is supposed to be at the very least French-influenced, the only difference seemed to be that it was licenced rather than BYO. There is far better to be had in Petersham.

Fabulous Night
Our wine club booked the private room to meet and found the entire experience fabulous. Many of our party were delayed due to various reasons but this did not bother the wonderful staff at the restaurant. The wines were unique, the food fabulous and the room perfect for us to hold our rowdy discussions. Thankyou to Ian and staff for a wonderful night - we will return

Great experience
The food was fabulous - better than expected. The entree selection was great and tasted fantastic - we tried just about everything as a big group. The mains are good, hearty and favoursome - some real original meals. The service was professional, friendly and prompt without being over the top and the atmosphere was warm and initimate. I would definitely go again. I work in the hospitality field and love finding a resturant to go back to and to recommend

Dinner for a Group
I am part of a regular small bookclub and we like to meet in restaurants to have a great meal and good conversation. Our recent evening at Blancmange was especially memorable. We were offered a private room where we could have a lively debate, the menu and food were excellent with enough choice to tempt all and great quality. The service was also good and added to the evening. We all agreed that we would return to Blancmange - something that we do not usually do.

Blancmange
We were a group of seven and had a great night - much improved since Manna. There's enough choice and the prices are ok. The food was well cooked and presented, meals good size. We went BYO, which was not a problem.
We would certainly return.
