While the name might evoke visions of pirates and similar blackguards, the clientele at this trendy West Perth joint doesn't really get any more roguish than the odd renegade lawyer. Instead, this is a prized dining spot among local businessmen and lunching matrons, offering excellent oysters, market fish of the day, pies, burgers, salads and Thursday night only pastas.
After a change in ownership in 2009, Black Tom's has moved away from being just an oyster bar, now catering to a broader range of tastes with dishes such as the grilled honey lemon chicken salad and the classic steak and mushroom pie. The decor has also been spruced up, with clocks appearing across the cafe to evoke a general theme of being "well connected" (or perhaps "clocking off" for the day?). With big umbrellas sheltering alfresco diners from the worst of the sun, Black Tom's has a funky casual feel that is ideal for both a quick bite or a long (and probably boozy) lunch.
