Black Star Pastry

Baker Christopher The's resume reads like a who's who of the Sydney culinary sphere, after successful stints creating the sweeties at fine-diners such as Quay and most recently Claude's. The has poured his passion for baking into his newest venture, Black Star Patisserie, next to another inventor on the scene, Oscillate Wildy.

Decadently scrumptious delights such as fresh baked sourdough, a slew of pastries and for the kiddies, the gingerbread ninjas, are all on offer here. There's a selection of sandwiches to choose from too, and the coffee comes direct from boutique Balmain roasters, the Little Marionette.

Amazing mouth watering pastries
First time at this cafe and I was amazed when I logged onto yourrestaurants and saw how little favourites and wishlists this cafe had. This is a true contender for Bourke Street Bakery, which has, for a long time, been my one and only place for sausage rolls.

I had the mince pie (heard the lamb shank was good, which explains why it was sold out by the time i got there). Cutting into the pastry was immediate satisfaction to the ears... the crunch was unbelievable and even more spectacular when biting through it. The pastry for the sausage roll was also light and crumbly!

Must try for dessert is the strawberry and watermelon cake... it was very refreshing... just like drinking a fruit juice! And what a surprise when I found out one of the many layers of the cake was a piece of watermelon!

Definately a hidden gem.

you'll def. love this place, if you love bourke street
It's quite an unnoticeable pastry shop on a quiet inner street of Newtown. The food there was amazing!!! My friend and I sat there for hours and went for our second and thirds rounds of pastries!!

In a small pastry like this one or Bourke street bakery, you wouldn't expect great service. But today, the service I got was really nice and unexpected. The girl saw how much we wanted to try the lamb pie and the macaroons, so she came out just to tell us 'the pastry is ready' =)

This shop could very soon overtake bourke street bakery as my fav bakery in syd!

Highly recommend: the Lamb Shank w/Red wine pie and whatever dessert they have on display, esp macaroons & strawberry, watermelon and rose cream cake!! They're gorgeous!!

Amazing sweets
This is a great local place for people-watching, with cute stools and good coffee. I love this place for the amazing sweets - everything is super yummy, especially the bread and butter pudding, and the panna cotta (in summer). There is such a large selection of cakes, pastries, tarts, and little petit fours that it's hard to choose! The quiches are also very moreish and deliciously eggy.

The only let-down is the service - a bit too cool for school. Staff like to engage in conversation with each other, either when you are standing right in front of them, or even mid-way through ordering. A bit of politeness wouldn't go astray . . . lucky the food is so great!
