With an adorably cluttered, country-cottage feel, Black Ruby is a popular choice for a hearty brekkie or lunch at one of the pavement tables on the weekends. However, dinners at Black Ruby are a local secret, with dishes ranging from a tender pepper-encrusted fillet mignon to quail or even kangaroo.

Unrealised Promise
The menu at Black Ruby is creative and interesting mod oz cuisine. The selection is not vast, but the dishes all sound so delicious that it was hard to narrow it down. Perhaps that s why they have an entr?e tasting plate.
Sadly, the quality of the dishes when they came out (and it took ages for them to come out) was mixed.
The scallops on scallop roe omelet entree was the culinary highlight of the night. The scallops were small, but fresh, plump and a lovely taste that was not overpowered by the sauce. The omelet was delectable, light, flavoursome and a perfect bed for the scallops.
Our other entree, the pumpkin pancake was smothered in rocket, and the pancakes gooey and lacked subtlety of presentation or taste.
The Duck Wellington main was generous proportion with crisp pastry crust perfectly cooked and just the right thickness. The duck inside was another story. Way undercooked, it was rubbery and lacked flavour.
The steak was thick, juicy and cooked to order, but without much flair.
Our broccoli and almond side was also a generous size, but the almonds were burnt on one side and untoasted on the other.
Finally, the vanilla creme brulee was covered in a perfect toffee topping, but the creme inside was running.
The service was very average. The meals were very slow coming (35 mins from order to entree and about 45 min from entree to main. Even the dessert too 20 mins).
An enjoyable night, creative menu, but let down by poor execution.

Beautiful setting and delicious food to suit all tastes
The hardest part about dining at Black Ruby is deciding what to eat. Both the breakfast and lunch menus have a variety of very exciting choices, including great vegan dishes that appeal to carnivores like myself! I've really enjoyed all meals that I've eaten here. Whatever the juice of the day is, it is sure to be refreshing and tasty!
Staff are friendly and the service is very satisfactory. The atmosphere is fantastic - lots of natural light, comfortable wooden furnishings and antique style silver sugar bowls all contribute to Black Ruby's unique charm.

Special occasion that just got better
It is hard to find somewhere that fits that special first night out with a new friend. The folk at Black Ruby and in particular Kate could not have made it better. Being more interested in talking we left the selection of food and wine up to Kate with a few prompts as to our preferences, what arrived at the table was impressive, as the mixtures of taste and texture in the dishes left us eating without a word being spoken. Its not often food gets in the way of a new romance, but there you go. Went back a week later and tried the brekkie (yes with same friend) and was not disappointed - it was as good as the dinner. Do yourself a favour, give this place a go. Be lazy, tell the staff your likes and dislikes and get ready for a pleasant surprise.

A Really Lovely Find
Dined on the first night open after the Christmas break. Very busy night with a comfortable, almost homely feel about the place. For a city-fringe eatery it should enjoy a very good year if those standards are maintained. An excellent one if they give it more publicity and the world at large gets to know about it. I hope they only have a very good year as I want to be able to go back without having to book too far in advance Food, service and general feel of the restaurant couldn't be faulted.
