Bistrode

Former MG Garage celeb-chef Jeremy Strode and his wife Jane took over the old Dragonfly site on Bourke Street to open this venture in 2005. Serving modern British-style food, Strode keeps it simple and tasty with similarly simple prices, earning and keeping an Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide Chef's Hat since 2007 for his efforts. This down-to-earth approach is a breath of fresh air to starving Sydneysiders who are used to paying twice as much for celebrity chef-prepared meals by Strode and his contemporaries. The restaurant space is also pleasing to punters, with a comfortably uncomplicated style and antique accoutrements.

Solid performance
The food was solidly good, but nothing to rave about. Don't get me wrong, I had a very good night but I didn't walk away and tell everyone about it. The service was fantastic but I thought the menu needed an overhaul (not the food but the descriptions) since the choice of wording might be quirky but it wasn't very enticing. And I want to be enticed!

A great night out
I've been meaning to dine at Bistrode for a while, and finally made it there last night. An excellent meal, vast wine list (always a plus, particularly when a corporate credit card will pay the bill) and spot on service. Will definitely return soon.

What IS all the fuss about?
This was my second visit to Bistrode, the first one being recently after it opened. I was hoping for better things but was again disappointed. The food on the menu is simply described, and just as simple on the plate. I ordered the wagyu corned beef and potato salad and that was what I got. A tender peice of corned beef and six small discs of potato with barely a smattering of mayo on them. No white sauce (which is always mentioned in reviews) and this is the second time I didn't get it. $28 for this, and to get some greens, had to pay an astounding $8 for 8 small slices of slightly chargrilled zucchini!

Others at my table enjoyed their food, but all agreed that is was nothing special and similar could be recreated at home. Jeremy Strode is one of Australia's star chefs, and boy, he has it easy here. Just another fad bistro concept that is sneakily overpriced. The room itself deceptively looks inviting but is rather cold and noisy when full. The staff were attentive but stitched up in white formal uniforms that you'd expect to see in a fine-diner with much more quality.

Bistrode just does not deserve the accolades it gets. It needs to make all of the meals somewhat more interesting so it feels like it's not something you could competently cook at home. If it must stay this simple, then loosen up, drop the prices a notch, and include the greens as a staple. I so wish I could have liked it more, but it isn't going to happen.
