Judging a book
Having never been to Bishamon before, I was a little underwhelmed by the first impression of this eatery. Booked as a special anniversary dinner, I was hoping for something a little classy and possibly even traditional. What was presented at first glance was polished cement floors and cafe-style seating on one side of the building. Walking through into the teppanyaki bar there was little change, apart from a slightly better seating option (padded!).
Ordering the standard teppanyaki set menu proved to be the winner. My BYO champagne was present in a complimentary ice-bucket, and the appetisers were delivered in record time. Even a small change (removal of the avocado from the sushi) was handled with aplomb, as the Japanese waitress explained that the chef was concerned that the removal would affect the visual appearance.
With appetisers nearing completion, the run of food kept coming. No sooner had we gotten tired of one dish, they were bringing more and more! At no time, however, was the atomosphere oppressive or rushed, as they let us go about our night with minimal disruption.
In all, a superb eat at a rather unappealing-looking venue. But then, I didn't book for the decor, did I?
