A cafe with character galore, this eatery is located in a heritage-listed building that was once a 19th-century butcher's shop. With retro decorations such as old Sao tins, Schweppes crates and antique scales, the cafe has also retained the old black cast iron poles with a rail and hooks. But forget about the carcasses that used to hang and instead focus your attention on the interesting menu. Start off with the zucchini flowers stuffed with a vegetable mix of rice and herbs, then move try the lamb and artichoke fricassee. Mums will love this spacious, child-friendly cafe, and the little ones will love the sandpit in the courtyard out back.

Back to form!
Being a regular since the wonderful Birdie Num Nums opened, I was rather upset when the place turned to a disaster zone, I couldn't agree more with the previous two reviewers. The staff didn't recognise me, the food slipped... I was beside myself - another one bites the dust... however - I found myself in Nicholson Street today with a friend and decided to give Birdie's one last chance - boy was that a good decision!! I started with a perfect and creamy cafe latte and then launched into the Chef's special "Croque Madame"... words can't express how much I still want to be eating that! The cheese, the egg, the butter... wonderful. We also ordered the "Deluxe 3 cheese melt" which was rich but lovely also. I was so shocked that the food was good again I told the(readily available and friendly) waiter and he responded with a very interesting "Great! Our Chef has been away on a 6 month world trip and is after comments on his specials, I will go and tell him"... So fellow reviewers, risk it, go back - I am next Sunday (Croque Madam here I come!!)

Once great cafe has slipped badly
I couldn't agree more with the above reviewer. I have been a regular at Birdies from the time it opened. For the first year or so it was great - fresh tasty food, good coffee and fast friendly service.
Oh, how times have changed.
Over the last couple of months it seems as though the owners and staff have read too many of their own reviews and become lazy. The service has become abysmal, and the chef/s has become lazy with the food. In the past couple of months, the food has become unappetising and I've even had to send one meal back to be redone. More than once, I've received an incorrect order with an item missing (which they still tried to charge for), and on a number of occasions I've waited up to 20 minutes just to even order a coffee. The last straw was this morning when I was seated for breakfast and walked out in disgust after waiting 45 minutes to be served. I wasn't even asked if I wanted a drink! There were plenty of staff and hardly any patrons, so there was absolutely no excuse.
They've lost me - I won't be going back.

Birdies channels Fawlty Towers
When it opened a couple of years ago, Birdie Num Nums was a breath of fresh air - wonderful atmosphere, great food, friendly service. It gave new life to a tired Nicholson St shopping strip and I went there often for breakfast, lunch, coffee and cake. Late last year a friend and I had a dreadful breakfast experience there - poor service, meals that when they finally arrived more than an hour later, were unappetising and - to add insult to injury - overcharging. While it was not a pleasant experience, I realise every establishment has their off days and I wasn't ready to write Birdies off yet. I am now though. We popped in for coffee on Sunday. Who would have thought coffee could be so fraught, so difficult to get right. It was early afternoon and the restaurant wasn't busy and yet it took an inordinately long time to get the attention of one of the five or six staff on duty. We ordered mugs of coffee and muffins. They got one of the coffees wrong, the muffins never came - although they tried to charge us for them. There are so many great cafes and restuarants in the area, I'll go elsewhere rather than risk a third experience like this. I wonder if the restaurant has changed hands. It puzzles me how something that was so good can morph into something so bad.
