Bertoni Casalinga has earned an enormous reputation in a very short time for hearty, traditional Italian food, drawing hordes of Balmain locals who descend on the cafe to stock up on meaty lasagne, rustic minestrone or their more-ish sweet offerings. Bertoni is geared more towards takeaways than anything else, with even meals eaten on site being served in plastic containers or cardboard cake boxes. However, if you can find a seat, it is worth dining in simply for the atmosphere of Italian warmth and geniality.

My favourite cafe in Balmain
Delicious and unpretentious fare with great service to boot. There's always a line out the door on weekends, but service always comes with a smile. The pastas and salads are great, and the ciambella alla nutella is just sublime. Oh yeah, and the coffee's good too!
